One by one my APPs have updates that only work with IOS 6 -- which will not work on the original iPad.   There is usually no way to download the older version of the APP - and so I can no longer use it. My iPad is still great for email and for reading books - but I would love it to be lighter ,,,,

Which is the single biggest issue with the AppStore. You buy software on physical media, you can install it years later, regardless how many new versions come out.

The fact that not even milestone releases are available, or that the AppStore can recognize what device you're using and installs the most recent app supported on a given OS/device, particularly when the device is on the latest OS it can support, is a big issue.

It forces millions of devices into the trash can, that could otherwise still have useful service lives. That's the one thing Greenpeace could focus on when bashing Apple, not the false claims about Apple using dirty power for its data centers...

It's sort of the point that Apple wants people to buy newer devices eventually to support newer software.

How would Apple gain any sales by all software working on a device for 10 years time or whatever. That's why PC sales are dying.

Exactly ---- I only need a new iPad now because Apple engineered the obsolescence of my current iPad ... and, at some point, they will do that to my next iPad as well.  I was happy with the operation of the APPs on my original iPad - but there is no way to bring them back - they can now only work with IOS 6 - which will NOT load. I have a $600 brick.

The point of any business or economic activity is to allocate scarce resources most efficiently. Profit is a reward for doing this.

It's not the job of economic activity to create artificial waste.

If Apple's new products are enough better, people will buy them, and if not, they shouldn't buy them.  That's what competition is all about, including competing with your own products of years past.

To build in trap doors like the AppStore does, is essentially anticompetitive behavior, and it's a strategy that creates economic waste and inefficiencies in a time when we're both on the brink of ecological disasters and have billions of undersupplied people.

It's a horrendous economic strategy to oversupply and waste resources on the fat and rich, when there are billions that don't have the basic necessities.

It's the US infatuation with size and growth. Apple would be just as fine a company if it sold less units because they last longer. In the end that sort of economic activity allows for more efficient resource allocation and a world in which more people can afford Apple products.

People seem to be willing to sacrifice the future of mankind on the altar of the almighty buck. Puke.

Whatever happened to "doing what's right" rather than "doing what's possible"?

Which is why jailbreaking is of paramount importance.

I honestly can't believe that this sentiment really exists.  Do you think Apple should be releasing some earth shattering new product every year?  Should there be a new product refresh every quarter?  Should they have a fancy press release every month sent straight to your inbox?  No.  That's ridiculous.

All we see is people complaining about buying something and how it immediately becomes obsolete.  So then Apple says, "Look: People buy for the holidays, so we're going to release stuff for the holidays."  They teach people when to buy and now you should know when you're buying an old product at risk.

Or maybe that just doesn't make sense to some people.  Maybe these are the people who invented Christmas in July.
    ::sigh::
Seriously... a year to wait for something nice is not that long.

A year is not a long time to wait. However, both from a public interest as well as giving people time to save for multiple devices makes a release schedule spread thought the year a good idea. iPad, iPad mini and iPhone can all be released one per quarter. At the very least iPhone and iPads should be separated by a few months.

What does any of that nonsense have to do with anything? And what trap doors? I have an effing first gen iPad and I've never had an app update beyond usability. Nor on my iPhone (first gen). My stars, man.

If they release the iPad mini with retina display, then the present model cost will be lower? Now it's $460 if you get it with a phone company http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Products/Apple-iPad-mini Christmas is too far though, and I don't care abut retina display anyway.
