$349-$399 is surely doable considering the material is plastic. Beyond that I might be considering getting the aluminum one with just $150 different. Besides putting it beyond $400 would certainly give a good breathe to Samsung for showing their competitiveness as they had already made phones with plastic materials and able to put the price even lower. The lower the Apple can do the better chance it will reach the broader market.
What often gets lost is that China's middle class is larger than the entire US population. (Or, as my daughter's engineering teacher pointed out, the top 25% of China's citizens in intelligence outnumber the entire US population).
Your daughter should tell her engineering teacher (or her dad, heh heh) that it's superfluous to specify top 25% of Chinese population in intelligence. Whether we are talking about height, intelligence, weight, etc., top 25% in any category is still the same number of people.
It's the only logical rationalization I can come to. I just wish it wasn't so. There is some Apple history of this strategy, I believe, but not a lot. IMO, some generations of the iPod Nano differed from previous ones just for the sake of being different.

Yes, but when you're trying to explain to the kids that the US doesn't have a monopoly on brains, it's a useful comment.
I don't know exact numbers, but I know the iMac was delayed because of the new welding method used. I assume it was expensive, given that they were struggling to meet demand. I'm sure it was not cheaper to manufacture. Maybe it'll get cheaper over time and larger scale. But it is still unnecessary. It would be better to create a beautiful, simple design that's more affordable, rather than go to great lengths to make it good looking just for the sake of it.
So, IOW, you're simply making things up to hide the fact that you don't know what you're talking about.
I can guarantee that Apple's engineers know infinitely more about the designs advantages and disadvantages than you apparently do.
You seem to know a lot about a product that hasn't seen the light of day. Can you explain what the different needs are? IPhone 4 can be used to read/write emails, surf the net, read books, play games, buy/sell, take photos, etc. How different are the needs addressed by 5C from these?
The 4 was made to be the best smartphone on the market 3 years ago. The 5C rather is being made solely to be low cost. That's what I mean in referencing that both smartphones were made to address different needs for consumers.
At this point the only thing we don't know about the 5C is its exact price but we do know that it has a 4 inch screen which already is a plus over the iPhone 4. If it has a better camera and faster processor that would make it far more desirable than the 4 is for the price.
Unlike US, Sales Tax are applied to the actual price. So Apple would still have to produce a phone that is around $400 in US, and after tax in China it would equals roughly to those the expected $486.

Why not wait to see if the product exists and, if it exists, what it looks like before passing judgment?
I think it's extremely unlikely that Apple would ever sell a product whose only reason for existence is 'low cost'. They have certainly sold products in the past which were lower in price than their existing products, but never sold a product that was 'low cost' compared to the rest of the market. In the case of phones, that means they might easily sell a phone in the $400 range, but they're not going to sell a $100 phone.
Furthermore, if the rumors are true, the design clearly is not just about low cost. The rumors say that it will be a good quality phone designed with colors to appeal to a different audience than the existing models.

Well, history suggests that rumors tend to converge asymptotically toward reality as September draws close.

I've seen a lot of rumors come and go over the last 10 years with nothing to show for it.

Agree. Just many do converge, particularly when parts emerge like apparitions.

I don't know about Chinese sweet spots but my sweet spot for a phone is much less than that, and I live in the USA.
I'll pay may be $100.
I was under the impression that Apple was working on a super cheap "nano" version of the iPhone. I
If Android weren't so plagued by malware I'd jump to that in a minute rather than mess with Apple. Hardware-wise the Android phones are better.
