Apple has confirmed the purchase AlgoTrim, a Swedish startup that specializes in data compression, in a deal that could allow the company to make services such as iTunes more efficient for mobile devices like the iPhone.

Update: After word of the AlgoTrim deal first surfaced Wednesday morning, Apple subsequently confirmed to AllThingsD that the deal did in fact take place. As is the company's policy, it declined to comment any further.

AlgoTrim "builds codecs and designs solutions that maximize performance of data, mobile imaging, video and computer graphics while minimizing memory requirements," according to TechCrunch. Apple's alleged purchase of AlgoTrim was first reported by Swedish news agency Rapidus.

Apple is said to have discreetly hired AlgoTrim through a Deleware-based holding company named Wedgwood Industries LLC. That company allegedly acquired all of AlgoTrim's shares this February.

AlgoTrim's technology simultaneously speeds up processing of data, while also reducing file sizes, allowing for connected devices with limited capacity, like the iPhone, to become more efficient and powerful.

The Swedish operation announced a photo album application for Japanese carrier KDDI in 2012. That application was said to improve JPEG file processing by up to six times.

Apple's last known acquisition from Sweden came in 2010 when the Cupertino, Calif., company bought Polar Rose, a facial recognition company, for $29 million. Among the products offered by Polar Rose was FaceCloud, which allowed for facial recognition in Web services, and FaceLib, which brought that functionality to mobile phones.

I felt really good back in time, when I read for the first time that Opera Turbo enables webpages to be  compressed via Opera's servers so that they use much less data than the originals. This post just reminded me about this Opera thing image

Wasn't the company behind Apple's maps flyover also from Sweden?

C3? Yes it was. Polar Rose was the other Swedish start-up that Apple acquired a couple years back, as mentioned in the AI article

Phase 1. Offensive - Make life difficult in the courts.
Phase 2. Regroup - Make smart(very ~ AlgoTrim) acquisitions / cut off Amdroid licences / build higher technology hurdles / reinforce principles of wholly owned IP.
    Phase 3. TBC

I think it's a good idea to increase conpentency on reducing file size as overall data will continuously increase.

Yes, you see Appe isn't going to use it for iOS at all, they are just going to leave it be, but reverse the algorithm. :D

If they were acquired in February, we may be seeing their tech in iOS7 this fall.

Apache has server compression for years.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when it was announced to the employees that they had been acquired by Apple.

I'm sure they had some die-hard Android fans in their ranks.

And add more buffer overflows for malware to exploit.

79% of all mobile malware is found on Android.

You forgot phase 3. Let android hurt itself with spyware. Doesn't the govt recommend android load antivirus on their phones now.

I found this demo video of their decompression algorithm. The data volume greatly increases near the end. :)

I'd love to see the compression algorithm Apple uses to stuff so much into such a small iPhone. Every internal photo I see of the iPhone amazes me!
