As a matter of fact it did take quite a bit of work to decide what bits of current Apple products to use parts of, and I had to do quite a bit of fixing just to use those. I cropped out the speakers and the media, respaced and resized them, and then I had to redo the front "finish" just using some fancy gradients. I didn't just lop the screen off of an eMac, it wasn't nearly that easy. Believe me. And I wanted to make it sort of a slightly convex PowerBook front with removable drive bays and a little LCD display but it just didn't work out. I also figure that Apple's pretty new to the rackmount game, so who knows. I wouldn't be surprised to see an optical drive, nor would I be surprised to see speakers just for the hell of it. I think that Apple is targeting MORE than just the traditional, boring rackmount market with this.. more than likely, lots of new users and tinkerers and small businesses and the like. Plus I had to have something fill that space. I should have added headphone jacks.

I also had integrated most of the ports on the back of the LCD iMac, with a few added obviously, but it just looked horrible, and I imagine that stuff will be in the back, in a typical Apple style of hiding the cords and clutter in the back, maybe with a neat little cable organization system.

The "door" that resembles an eMac's (okay, okay, it IS an eMac's) flips down to provide access to some headphone ports, the optical drive, machine info, maybe a little LCD screen the size of the iPod's, and maybe a USB port and a display port of some kind (for quick operations).

It's not the most creative thing in the world, but after nearly 2 hours of trying to put something together it was the first nice looking thing I came up with. Matsu is right, though, it's more like the "pizzabox" most people have wanted than a rackmount.

Let's see all of you critics try. Not that I mind criticism, when it's constructive. I just want to see what other people come up with. Even a sketch. Or just part of something. Add on to what I made.. whatever.

Oh yeah, and **** you, I have plenty of imagination. I could shit out some crappy little scribblings that are more "imaginative" than really innovative or intelligent, like you, or I could do my best to try and make some kind of realistic-looking product that Apple might actually MAKE (and in fact they will). I did have something like it in mind initially.. like a fat side of an iBook, with brushed chrome, sort of bulging out of the 1u or 2u rack, with little white LEDs and a flip-down door that reveals the drives, a few ports, a little LCD display. But I'm the first to admit, I couldn't just mock that up with the snap of my fingers.

Anyway... I probably deserved that for how harsh I was with your mockups.

And this isn't my first real "mockup," I have made quite a few, just.. some were not very good, and most were just small changes in comparison to a whole new type of product like this.

I'd be very surprised if I'm even closed to what the rack looks like, to be truthful. I'd actually be pretty disappointed if Apple did something so predictable like I did!

with a reply like "Oh yeah, and **** you," goes to show that you must have some passion for this you mocked up (and you should be proud of it). i am always excited to see what other people design here. i thought i was being "nice" regards comments i wrote above. it is not how much time you spent on a design or a prototype that makes it "great," etc. one of the most innovative that changed the world as some say was "a wheel." if your computer skills in designing (using one) lacks, perhaps you can draw your ideas instead. (it seems like you do have tons) i for one, barely know the basic skills in photoshop, thus all the "doodles." it would be much more exciting to see your penciled drawings with all that you want to show than trying to make something realistic using lack of computer skills and loosing all your great ideas and thoughts in it. now that is one bad english. :-) keep up the good work!
