I usually wait until the hype is over, but wife wants a Gold one (I Think women will like this color) so I have to order it as soon as I can. She is not particularly patient...and, well, spoiled...
if it had a bigger screen I would order one for myself as well, but I can live with my Galaxy Nexus until the larger screen arrives (if it does not I will not get one)

For your sake, she better not be looking over your shoulder, or she'll make you get a 5C in order to overcome this waiting for gold.
Different context, but that graphic only served to remind me (again) what a rip-off U.S. carrier rates are…
Everywhere else in the world I go, mobile service is reasonably priced by comparison. In particular, carriers here make much of data usage/pricing (like, charging exorbitant rates for text messages which add up to a mere few bytes most times). I wish we had your "pay as you go" rates:
300 minutes, 3,000 texts, UNLIMITED data, for 30 days. For about $25? Wow, if only… I could use iMessages, FaceTime and Skype for most of my calls and texts, and never hit my talk time or text limits.
Here it's unlimited talk and text for about $50 a month (even though surveys show that voice calls on smart phones are actually the LEAST common usage on those handsets), and then they charge (sometimes a LOT) more for any reasonable amount of data. Highway robbery.
One of the most reasonable plans is from T-Mobile at $70 a month, providing "unlimited everything" but that unlimited data actually has a cap on the LTE usage, and throttles to near un-usability after a certain point. So, $70 vs $25? Yeah… typical.

She already tried that one... Her solution was to get a blue 5c for "me" that she could use until the gold one arrived and then give me the blue 5c model since I do not really care about color and put a rubber case on my phones anyway...

And the exec branch buffoons in DC and our courts think that e-book 'price-fxing' that may or may not have pushed up prices by a few cents is the problem....
If I stand outside a London Apple Store at 8am next Friday in the pouring rain, will I be able to pick up an *unlocked* iPhone 5s, or are the unlocked ones only available via the online store/app?
I've never bought an iphone on day 1, I'll be attempting to buy a 16gb 5s (not gold) from the Manchester, UK store. Anyone with any experience of going on day 1, is it realistic I'm going to have to arrive at store way before it opens to have a chance of purchasing one. I know this is one of those "who knows" questions, just wondered with previous releases how successful people have been on the first day.

For the first-gen iPad, I arrived at the store at roughly six in the morning, and there was a line of maybe 20 to 30 people already there in front of me. That was the "buying right now" line, and there were maybe ten who had preordered, too (separate line, separate set of iPads). By the time of store opening, the line was probably 200 day-of, 100 preorder. I got mine (64), and there were a fair few left of the three capacities (64 the most, of course), but I'm sure people at the end of the line went home empty-handed
This was Columbus, OH, before they had more than one store. Certainly not my nearest store, but I was on vacation at the time.
Manchester… Hmm… what sort of size equivalent are we looking at in terms of US city?
Well it would depend on the comparison US city, Manchester has a population over 500,000. There are two Apple store's roughly 20 min drive from each other. I just figured if I'm going for day one, I may as well make some type of effort. 6am would be do-able I'm usually in the city for work around that time. Thanks for the reply.

Sure thing. I definitely think you should be all right with a 6AM arrival in those circumstances.
If I was up at midnight ordering I would be thinking it would just be shipped to me, I realize this isn't a pre-order but in the past they have shipped next day. I wonder if they will be doing Saturday delivery, Monday or just ground, we shall see when it goes live next week.
Why does anyone think people will be up ordering these? And the one people will want, the 5S, isnt available online. Brilliant move by Apple (that's sarcasm). As a shareholder it's pretty pathetic they are limiting the release of their newest phone to brick and mortar stores. Should we go back to the 1990s while we're at it?

Because no one buys a phone after the first day it's available? (that's rhetorical)
ETA: Were an order placed online at 12:01 A.M. PST when would that phone be delivered?

To modify a quote, "It's the iPhone, stupid!" The heck are you thinking?

As a shareholder…
Who gives a frick? I think most other shareholders would prefer you sold yours, since you seem unable to even visit Apple's website before making a decision. The article here says it's available online, even. You can't read the title of this web page?
The releasing the iPhone 5C and 5S at different times is poor, but sadly reasonable, the 5S being sold later for the people who just want new phone to be limited to 5C. Still apple is trying to push out a piece of plastic as top iPhone at only $100 difference, why can't they be like IPad at $170 difference?
The question is whether or not there will be a RESERVE for in-store pickup.
When the iPad 3 launched, there was also no pre-order. But we were able to "Reserve for in-store pickup" the day before.
I did that, and knowing there would still be a line, went to Apple at 6 AM. Upon arriving, there were TWO separate lines outside the Apple Store: Reserved and Non-Reserved.
The Reserve line was much shorter and I believe I walked up as 3rd in line, while the Non-reserve line was already extensive.
When the doors opened at 8, they let in all the Reserves first, got us our iPads, and then let the riff raff fight over what was left.

I'm leaning towards the gold.
Although, everytime I see it, it makes think of Catherine Zeta-Jones for some reason?
"Classy"…?

That would seem to be the case, just like FR & DE

Pop.: .5M
Two Stores, this one (V2.0 design) opens @ 9am:
This one (30') opens @ 10am:
Thank you captain obvious for confirming that you can't order the 5s online (yet).
It would be nice to hear some data around 5c sales (since all the delivery dates from the Apple store still show 9/20).
