Actually in regards to voicemails from numbers that are blocked. You'll never receive a notification of a new voicemail. The voicemail will be placed in a folder called "blocked" in your general voicemail mailbox.
Withheld, blocked or unknown telephone numbers are increasingly annoying. Apple need to facilitate a block on these calls ASAP in the next iOS update. This is a serious issue for myself and many others.

Unfortunately this service does not stop all the calls, especially from overseas. The facility to block these calls exists on Android and jailbroken iPhones and it shouldn't be too difficult for Apple to give iPhone users the option to "block" calls from withheld, blockedorunknowntelephone numbers.
How about a message that informs them that what they are doing is illegal and that they have been reported to the authorities?
I find the feature really confusing the way Apple has implemented it also. They directly imply that you have to add the number to contacts before it can be blocked, (which is stupid and awkward), then several websites have reported that you don't have to do this, you can block it right form the recent calls list. But when you do that, although it seems to work, the language on the button-label-not-really-a-button-thing is "block contact" even though you haven't created a contact. Weird and stupid and confusing etc.
I haven't found it confusing. Whoever wrote that is says "block contact" from the recent calls list got it wrong. It actually says "Block this Caller". Works for me, just blocked my ex-wife!! ;P
The article said "A call from a number that has been blocked will result in that call being forwarded to voicemail".
I don't have an active voicemail account (and I don't want one). So in this case what will happen if a blocked number tries to call me.
I suspect that the phone is automatically declining calls from blocked numbers, so whatever happens when you tap the red "decline" button is what will happen.
I hope in the next update.. You can pick what you want to block someone from. For example: say, I want someone to be able to call me, but not text. I'd like for there to be that option.
I completely agree! if I put someone on a blocked list it means I don't even want a voicemail from them!! I wonder if anyone has heard if they are fixing this problem?!
what does it mean when you call an iphone and it doesn't ring at all, for like 16 seconds (silence), but then finally rings at 16, but only one time and then you're sent straight to voicemail. also, when i try to send a text to such iphone it doesn't show as imessage anymore like it used to even when you're typing it, but as a text. could it be i was deleted from contacts and i am now being dubbed as a no disturb? or am i blocked? or simply it's because i have ios6 and they might have ios7? i tried to call the number with a blocked number and the same thing happened, and when i tried to write a message to it with another iphone (not mine) it still showed as a text message too. so i'm thinking it might be the donotdisturb option for people not on contact list and/or blocked calls. thoughts?
This is not a paid feature on the new iphone. It is a free feature. There IS a paid feature through most carriers that does allow you to completely block a number. But the new iOS also has a free feature that can block callers by simply sending them straight to voicemail... hence the comment of the voicemail earlier on in the feed.

Maybe add two contacts to your address book. One named "Blocked" and one named "Unknown." See if that works?
Nope. Didn't work! I even cut and paste the word "Blocked" into the phone number field. Didn't do the trick.
