Ah, those idiots at Apple. I'm sure you have much more proven experience at this kind of product management than Cook, Schiller et al. And your strategy would have led to many more than 9M sold.

Because it’s the exact same thing they’ve done for the past three years and hasn’t confused anyone yet.

Instead Apple should have put an effort into a 5" model as a second option.

Why should they make a uselessly large phone?

I think this sound right.  Most people who buy over the initial weekend want the biggest and best phone available.  I think that the 5c will actually outsell the 5s over the year or so until the next release...

    Just my opinion of course....

P.S. I think that the reason the 5c exits is to basically sell a iPhone 5 that is less complicated to produce.  The injection case has to be easier to make than a precision machined aluminum case...  Not a bad idea at all...

Because a lot of people like me want a bigger screen....

I have got used to the 5" phones and simply prefer them...

IMHO If apple had release a larger phone they would have easily doubled the number sold or cut the sale out time in half...  There is a pent up demand for a iPhone with a larger screen.

Investors want cheaper iPhones. iPhone users want Great iPhones. Nice to see my stock is back up after those dumb asses keep knocking the need for apple to play cheap like Samsuck.

There’s no proof of either of those assertions.

Every person who claims that the 5c is just a molded plastic case on an iPhone 5 is just plain ignorant. The radio is significantly upgraded and there is an improved FaceTime camera, just to note two things we already know about. As for margins on it, it takes a pretty wild guess to claim that margins are significantly improved versus if they had followed their "normal" strategy of just moving the 5 down one notch.

Camera upgraded along with the radio to allow them to use the same parts as in the 5s for economy of scale, only reason they are doing it. It makes business sense.

Some of us predicted it on keynote date.

$449 should of been the official price when it was introduced not $549.

Yes, but what's the point of designing, manufacturing, and selling a second less expensive model when it's barely less expensive than the flagship phone?  Who's going to buy the 5C?  The thing still costs $550 off-contract.

    Yep - go figure?

(Re. Who's going to buy the 5c?) Yep - go figure?

I guess everyone was primed by incorrect analyst guesses that it was going to be the low cost model, and not the 2nd tier that's been at the same price for 3 years now...

Isn't it a shame when a phone only sells an estimated 1 or 2 million in its first few days. I bet they must be ashamed of it now that no one's going to want to buy it.

    I mean - that's probably only between 300 - 600 million $$ profit in three days. I know I'd be upset with that. :o)

There’s no proof of either of those assertions.

    Assertion 1:
IMHO If apple had release a larger phone they would have easily doubled the number sold or cut the sale out time in half...

    Just one mans opinion.

Hard to back it up too when you take into account that for the last few years Apple have sold out of every iPhone they've made.

It's possible and likely that they could've sold millions more this year if they could produce them in time.

Pretty impressive how they've managed to ramp up production this much each year, but hard to measure whether this years is more popular or just better stock levels.

Will be the same too (hard to tell if more popular or just better stock) if a big screen one is ever produced, unless they come out with two flagship models with exactly the same specs except screen size.

    Assertion 2:
There is a pent up demand for a iPhone with a larger screen

    I can provide proof...

I have a receipt for a Galaxy S4 that I bought when my iPhone died.

I can link to a tonne of articles and reviews that say this.

I have work colleagues that have gone from iPhone to a bigger screen android and say they like it better because of the bigger screen.

I have other work colleagues who have said that very same thing: "I might wait until they come out with one with a bigger screen", or "if they don't come out with a bigger screen I'm going with an Android". (That one since changed his mind after talking with others who went to the dark side and regretted it).

I would be keen on one. I liked the size if the S4 but sold it 'cause I just didn't like the way they do the home screens, the double ups on built in apps, the smaller range wifi, the GPS bug that slows down lock on time, the lack of compatibility with work computers (xp) to download photos, and about 13 other things I could go on about...

This is why I'm happy and looking forward to the 5s.

I am not gullible to marketing, or stupid. I spend a lot of time researching - reading positive and negative reviews and opinions before I buy gadgets. I just like something different to you. That's all. And I'm not the only one. Whether Apple ever make one is the next thing. There's been enough hints though that it's seeming likely they will one day.

Apple won't cut prices. They will likely add a 8GB option after the holiday season, to keep sales of the 5C up and faze out the 8GB iPhone 4S.

Kuo, of whom was right on most of the details on the iPhone launch said that the 4S would only be manufactured till the end of the year. An 8GB 5C would make sense in addition to new colors for the Spring time.

That'll breathe new life into iPhone sales during the typical slump.

Interesting. I think that would work well, but I’m not sure they’d do it.

It's what they did with the iPod Touch line earlier this year.

They brought out a more expensive 32GB Colorful iPod Touch last year. Kept the old model around to cover the low end. Then in Spring canned the old model and brought out a 16GB version of the new model in the same price slot the old one occupied.

This strategy would partially explain why Apple decided to keep the 4S and price the 5C higher than expected.

Apple will be able to assure high profits over the holiday season, and then after the holidays they can save money by ending all 4S production and moving resources to 5C/5S production. Also with this strategy they'll be able to increase sales in the Spring by offering their "brand new" 5C in a new smaller storage size for "free" on contract or $449. At the same time they won't have to lower current prices.

It was probably Cook and companies entire strategy and they are probably laughing at the foolish analyst now that are still demanding a price cut. Apple figured a way to maximize profits and sales while maximizing consumer's choices. Tim Cook is a genius.

Not surprising, who would wait in lines for last years hardware (and a new pretty but cheaper enclosure).
