So those of us who bought iLife and iWork in a box - the only option seems to be $90 worth of buy-again at the Mac App Store for Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie and iPhoto. Or am I missing something?
So does collaboration only work between iWork on the Web Beta users, or also between Pages users in the program?
I've also found iMovie on iPhone to be very interesting to play with while out, but would only find it truly useful if I could also take a partially made project from my phone and open it on my computer to fine tune it. Anyone know if it does that?
Gregoriusm: you guessed right. It's very reasonable to exclude a 6 years old machine if the new version relies on new technology. It's why Office (which is a great alternative for you) is bloated with old technology by comparison and doesn't really try innovate. Which makes sense given the fact Office needs to run on about every machine in the world.

The App Store automatically detected my boxed version of iWork and my pre-app store bundled iLife and asked me to associate them to my account during the free upgrade process. For some reason, it didn't detect Garageband, but when I manually installed it, it automatically moved the old version and acted like I already paid for the extra sounds.
Just had to post to say even though I have no qualifying new Mac, I have now had free updates to the complete iWork as well as iLife suite (both bought as boxed versions). Not expected at all but thank you Apple. Also got the new Aperture with support for video on iCloud, awesome. Now I am expecting Logic Pro X to get an update any time soon so it too can save to iCloud. Quite an exciting evening!
Just one request: Please Apple add collaboration between different Apple ID users for your music apps as well as iWork.
I had a few issues with having to click in different spots (i.e. going to the "installed" portion instead of updates, and in some cases actually going as if I were to purchase it in the "Mac Apps" section of the app store)
However, I have an '09 Mac Mini and got Mavericks, iLife and iWork updates for free.
Not long before that Mac Mini I had an iBook, and was paying $150 for the OS and $70 for the i-suite products. This 600 dollar mini is certainly getting stretched a lot further than I expected it to.
EDIT: to gush a little more, what other tech company would ever allow someone who bought the cheapest product they produced (at the time) almost five years ago to get the latest productivity/OS for FREE? It really is pretty telling that - though they charge a hefty premium for their premium devices - they don't appear to simply be greedyas many anti-appelites try to paint them
I agree. I am sitting here with a 2010 15" MBP i7 that I put in a 256 GB SSD plus a 1TB HD, maxed out the RAM and ripped out the Optical. Now with free Mavericks, free iWork updates and free iLife updates (plus Aperture). It seems like Christmas came early. Amazing! Utterly amazing (and let's not forget all the free iOS versions too).
Even though I am ordering a Mac Pro, I now intend to keep the MBP too. Normally I sell old Macs when I upgrade as they are starting to feel 'old' but this now feels like a new Mac and I am damned if I will part with it now!
Only thing left for Apple to do is allow a second bite at Extended Applecare. I'd happily fork out for another two or three years now the first one is expiring on my MBP.
Whenever it was dumped it remains a shame. Yes i am glad it still works but ... Imagine, editable header data, save as and open recent (multiple sites in single files ... no need for iWebSites), client user update areas widgets, full iWork and iLife hot integration for live updates and saving to iCloud with collaboration development available! (I am talking about on genuine hosting not hosting via anything from Apple). Then buy Hype and build it in.
All the above wouldn't take Apple very long to implement either I am sure.
Yep same here on iPhone 4S and 5. Not to mention iWork is also free on old Macs (I assume if you have the old boxed version installed as I had).
It's Christmas come Early
That's cool. I wonder if it will work on my 3rd gen iPad? I haven't upgraded it to iOS 7 but am handing it down to someone so for sure will upgrade before I give it away if it means free software.
Question: I use LaTeX a lot and have in the past used LaTeXiT in Pages/Keynote via the Services menu. It appears that this is no longer supported in Maverics & new Pages/Keynote. I can still do it in TextEdit, but cannot seem to make it work in the fancy apps. There is an equation editor in iBooks Author and you can download '84 MathType (but seems to not do inline). Any thoughts?
A bit disappointed in Keynote for Mac OS X. They have taken away my favourite transition (perspective). All told I'm not hugely impressed with the new transitions particularly since Perspective has been dropped. Not sure why. For me Perspective was one of the best slide transitions and now it's gone. Annoying. I doubt it will be brought back and I doubt there is a way to get it back in there again.
Shame iWeb was dumped. A new version in line with the rest of iWork would have been pretty cool. I have Dreamweaver and a host of other Web design apps but I can still do a lot in minutes in iWeb that takes a long time in anything else.
Totally agree. For quick & easy websites, iWeb was great.
The best feature was that, by putting a slight invisible shadow on text, the font would render automatically on any desktop browser.
Yes I know html5 has this but iWeb was super simple. Guess the black MacBook with snow leopard will be around for a while longer.
Hope the desktop iWork apps no longer use the Inspector window, and place the options that were there to a pane that uses less screen real estate.
The inspector window was very small and concise. I'm not sure how they could make it use less real estate and still be usable. However, the inspector pane is now an inspector panel and not only uses more real estate, but you can only have one of them open at a time. It's nice that it is contextual, but (particularly in Keynote) I frequently had more than one inspector panel open at a time.
I'm so glad Apple gave us the updates for free. I love Pages and was ready to pounce on the new version for $20. Unfortunately, I don't know that I'll ever use it. They've simply removed too many essential features - rather than updating the iOS versions to increase parity with the OSX versions, they've dumbed down the OSX versions to increase parity with the iOS versions.
Pages has lost its page layout mode along with linked text boxes and the ability to shuffle pages. This was my primary reason for using Pages (I rarely create word processing documents, nearly all my work is done in page layout mode) and having lost this functionality means I will continue to use Pages from iWork '09 and will also brush up on my InDesign skills. Pages to me did most of what I needed in a page layout tool more quickly than InDesign and was my go-to tool unless I needed more advanced layout. The new version of Pages no longer works for me.

Thanks for finding one more reason not to love the new iWork. I loved perspective too!
Here's hoping I like the new Numbers at least since I'm not sure I'm going to like Keynote, and I already hate the new Pages... Phhbbbttttd!

Will answer myself once I've played

Apple need to rethink the OSX logos of Numbers, Keynote, Pages, iBooks, iTunes, iPhoto and Safari. They look bland and uninspiring.
I actually prefer the flat look of iOS7.

Did you watch the keynote? They explicitly do that. More screen space, but it’s much better than the window.
