For a building larger* than the Pentagon and the grounds to go with it, I think two years is ludicrously optimistic. I hope Apple doesn’t think construction can be managed like product creation. Because it can’t. Construction is basically freeloading.

*Physically, not square footage, people; calm your iPods.

The Pentagon has a lot more floor space than Apple's Campus 2. We're talking something 2.8MM v. 6.5MM. I think Campus 2 might have a larger footprint when you consider the center space but that space but that is child's play compared to anything with walls, water, electric, permits and inspections. Plus we need to consider the design which may have a great many of the structural supports and certainly the glass be fabricated elsewhere and brought on site which could mean the "construction" officially started a couple years ago.

Where did you get 2 years from? If the building is complete 3 years from this time next month it'll still be 2016. I'm thinking it'll open around Sep/Oct 2016.

Browsing design and architecture is a big hobby of mine. I think this'll be beautiful when it's completed.

And they just now got the final permits?

Final go ahead to build. They had permission to knock and prepare.

The article, which says both “by” and “sometime in”, but following the “by” link tells me that… oh, it still says both “by” and “sometime in” that article, too. I’m not surprised… just disappointed.

It’d be great if AI actually linked to the places it’s getting its info so we could see the actual quote…

Am I wrong about the internal space?

No, just fulfilling a prophecy. ;)

I see, but my point about the time frame still stands if most of the footprint is just soil and shrubbery.

Not really, since I’m talking about the building.

    Whatever; it’s not important.

Yeah, but the building proper is much smaller than the Pentagon so when it comes to actual time to build we need only concern ourselves with the building structure since the landscaping is relatively easy and don't have to be up to code, at least not in the same way, as the structure itself.

That plus a great deal of it being transported in and fitted (just a guess) makes me think less than 2 years from now is quite doable.

Am I misremembering that the new building is big enough to hold the Pentagon inside the torus?

I thought the torus was the center axis of the ring, but I am not certain. If it is then it doesn't look like it could, but it does look like it can hold it with the overall radius of the structure's footprint.

That's the graphic I was thinking of... So, the Pentagon has more square footage based on the additional pentagonal "rings" it would seem.

Yeah, according to Wikipedia it has 6.5 million sq ft compared to Campus 2's piddly 2.8 million sq. ft.

Nearly the entire Pentagon fits inside the courtyard which just shows how massive that ring is and if you removed open space from the Pentagon it could fit entirely within Apple's courtyard.
