what's with all the bitching and negativity??
it's a month BEFORE macworld and people are already complaining about the products......geesh
can we just think a little more positively? please? i know this thread is supposed to be neg, but do you really think apple's going to bring out a 500Mhz PM?
macs are a little slower than PCs....ok....but apple's selling point is not speed, but quality products. PM are about trying to be as fast as they can be, but you can't blame them......it's really hard to keep up with AMD and Intel......
so can we all just relax a little?
[end of pointless rant........]

Actually, as the creator of this thread, I am here to say it it was a joke.....
I think you need to relax. Though, let me tell you, my heart is bleeding for Apple because their hardware can't compete with intel.
I have already said I'm not going anywhere....I just like to bitch!
[quote]If MacAddict wanted to spend a lot of money then yeah he could get something now. But he wants this for $1500. Knowing Apple I think it'll be at least a year or two until you can get that for $1500.

Ok, let me get this straight, an 867 gets over 100fps...you think it will take Apple two years to lower the price of the 867 to the price of a 733?
I think one of the new consoles will be a perfect system for you. Even for FPS games -- developers have really started to sort out the game pad controls. The better games will get ported, and the gameplay, and graphics, will remain quite good. Would you rather spend $300-500 on a console every 5 years, or spend that much on system upgrades every 5 months? Hey, it's your money.
Consoles always seem to be for simple minded games. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll see games like Rainbow 6 on a console, where you plan your missions, execute them etc. Nor will we see Flight Sim 2002.
Consoles seem to be getting better...but by getting better they just get more and more like a PC. We still can't download mods and patches, upgrades and user add ons to a console. We don't get true internet multiplayer, or a full line of gaming accessories and peripherals. It's kind of like Steve's thing with web appliances, except consoles are a game appliance. We want the full game experience, not a "gaming junior" experiance. By the time you add everything to a console that one would want, you have a gaming PC.
Consoles are nice for certain games, but for a lot I'd still rather be on a PC.

mm, I wouldn't call Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, etc simple minded. The PC games will exist because they require the keyboard for all types of operations. But they will never beet console games. Rainbow 6 is cool, but MGS is much more fun to play for me.
I'd much rather play a game in my living room on my 27" tv with bose stereo system.
Steering wheels, arcade sticks, even keyboards and mice (dreamcast and PS2) are all available for consoles.
The PC really only has internet multiplayer, and high resolutions advantages. We will probably see the games you mention at least on the x-box, and perhaps on the others. As for depth there are some very deep RPG's for consoles (even for PS1 and N64), and the popular RPG and RTS games are available too. Internet connectivity will be available for all the consoles by sometime in 2002. M$ and Sony are both very keen on this.
Once again, in just about every genre the consoles do it better. Platformers, sports, racing/driving sim, 3d and 2d fighters... are all better on consoles. You get a big screen, an appropriate controller, short or no load/set-up/install time. There is plenty of fun and focus to be had. The RPG, RTS, and FPS games are probably better on a PC right now -- the monitor, keyboard, mouse combo is hard to beat. But I'd say that the current consoles have enough muscle to deal with FPS games, and just about any mac/budget PC can deal with the other two (which hardly require state of the art hardware.)
I guess the point is, that if you really like the mac for everything else, games aren't enough of a reason to buy a PC (or a mac for that matter.) Of course people do, but it's a little foolish when you think about it. With $1500 you could buy one of the consoles, about 25 games, and some extras for it that all work as well as the day you picked up your machine. And that's without a trip to the local China Town.
[quote] Yeah, maybe they'll get the 867 to the bottom line someday, but by then we'll all be playing Quake 6 or something

LOL, the 867 will be low end after MWSF, if Apple even offers anything that slow in a Powermac. My bet is that 1 GHz is the slowest new Powermac you can buy after MWSF.

Just. Just simply factor in a 10-14 month lag curve.
In other words, the G4 SHOULD have been at 733, 867, etc. last February or so and bumped to the GHz-busting barrier at this past summer's suckball MWNY keynote.
Then, at MWSF in 4 weeks, the G5 (at the crack-induced predictions of 1.6GHz and so forth) should be unveiled.
But seeing how Apple runs this weird, slow upgrade lag, that's not going to happen.
Next month's MWSF will simply see the G4 breaking the GHz barrier. And even THEN, it'll only be the high-end $3499 model, which no one actually can afford. I imagine the bulk of G4 sales to individuals and those earning an average, regular Joe income come from the two lower-end models, which will probably be 867MHz and 933MHz or something like that, come MWSF.
For the masses to get a GHz-busting Power Mac for $1699 or whatever, you're probably going to have to wait until summertime.
Just when they finally get the low end machine to a snazzy fast level, it's already long-in-the-tooth to most people.
The MW that would make you switch to PC....Fantasy/Horror Time
The room darkens. It warms to a pleasant temperature. On the screen: an iPod. It starts to swing gently back and forth while the soft sounds of gentle waves on a beach play in the background. A soft voice (Helen Shaver) whispers "you are getting very sleepy..."
And just as you nod off, you see the men in the white jumpsuits marked Lobotomies"R"Us coming out from the wings with the knitting needles........
Apple seriously needs POWER and right now! My iMac 500 is nowhere near fast enough at running Appleworks and Internet Explorer! Look, I have to wiait .6 seconds for IE to start!
*Sarcasm*
Apple is and always will be a premium company. Don't expect the best value. Jusdt expect the best quality/

Quake III is old anyway...it's games like Ghost Recon and RTCW that I'd want to play. Oh yeah, they haven't been released for Mac yet.
Thats all that counts.
But PC users don't get Otto Matic

I hope so.
The high end machine evntually becomes the entry level machine.

That's just true.
Isnt that the case with all of apple's hardware.

I don't know it it's always like that, it's just turned out that way recently.

My G4 867 consistantly gets over 100 fps @ 1152x864. Of course I have a GeForce3 but still I get well over 100fps.
Tell that to someone who experienced the Green Light Of Death.
