Yeah, try to stuff a Nomad Jukebox in your pocket and tell me that USB is the only difference. This has been beaten to death. The iPod is tiny so it must use a tiny PCMCIA size HD which is very expensive compared to the standard laptop HD used in the Nomard Jukebox and other similar devices. As an example, a 1GB IBM Microdrive costs around $350 yet you can get a 10GB laptop HD for less than half that amount. Why do you suppose that is? Toshiba sells the same HD used in the iPod for $399 direct. That's the same price as the iPod but with the iPod you get more than just the HD. You get a great MP3 player too. If you don't like the price just wait until they introduce the 10GB version of the iPod and the price of the 5GB version will drop.

Exactly! I'm waiting for the 10GB version so I can use half of the HD space to store my files and use a disc repair utility with it. Can't do that with a Nomad Jukebox. I figure the 10GB version will be introduced at the same $399 price as the original while the original will drop $50 to $100 at the time of its introduction.
IMHO the iPod is not over priced. I agree it is expensive but those are two completly different things. Also you are paying for the ipod for the same reason you bought a Mac. You wanted style, ease of use, functionality. I for one love the iPod and am dying to get one.
I would speculate that future versions of iPod will have mutiple purposes to not only include mp3 from iTunes but also short clips from iMovie or images. The name "iPod" implies a nuetral name which can have many uses. There can also be advanced screen to display images, UI, iTunes display, organizer?, etc. Can you imagine if this also had a airport card for wireless uplinks/downlinks like bluetoooth? or act as an electronic payment system? etc.
i also expect that the $399 tag is to get the hot and horny to pay more and then soon after in feb, decrease price to $299 maybe. i also expect that the firmware can be updated to support new and upgraded sw components.
if i were apple, i would be thinking about tying in every single "i" app into this or other new devices.
smart move i think. when chicks go shopping, they want to "accessorize". this
is apples way to accessorize around the shopping mall called digital hub.

I saw it because one of the Apple Store employees had one out showing another customer and I walked over and he asked if I wanted to see it and play with it for a minute.
Why is it, that Microsoft is releasing XP worldwide on the same day and Apple can't do the same with the iPod, though it has already different languages on board???
On the first day the iPod was displayed in the German Apple Store Website I ordered one, but it is still being assembled...
