In Australia we had to wait until 2008, at the time I was using a Motorola Razr, much like the ones Ive and Schiller were using, I was looking into what to get next and was torn between a Moto Q or a Blackberry but wasn't terribly impressed.

I attended a prelaunch training session on the iPhone and BAM, I was hooked it was exactly what I wanted, it was if it was custom designed for what I wanted from a phone, picked up my first 3G on launch day, then the 4, 5 and departed from my usual two year cycle to pick up a 5s.

That's not all that changed after leaving Macs in the late nineties and dabbling in Windows and Linux for a few years I got sick of all the hassle dealing with syncing my iPhone with Linux (couldn't do it) and dual booting Windows XP (hated it) I bought a MacBook in early 2009, then a Retina MacBook and an iPad in 2013.

I still have SMS's from that first iPhone that continue to carry over via my iTunes back ups.

I have also owned plenty of Android phones from 1.6 on the HTC Magic through to 4.3 on a Galaxy S4 with several Nexus phones and tablets BUT number one, iOS on iPads and iPhones wins hands down.

The iPhone is another great Apple product and my  iPhone4 has been 100% reliable as well. Just off it's 3yr contract I'm going to use it for at least a yr more on a discounted pay as you go plan. With my iPhone4's excellent WiFi and WiFi hot spots everywhere I only need a 200mb data plan.  WiFi is much faster than my carriers 3G, except after midnight when others are sleeping.

It does my job very well;  I'm a light phone and fairly heavy data user.

My stupid phone Co. offered me an older Samsung or an older Nokia for $0 plus a $50 credit if I would take one off their hands; even before my iPhone4  plan ended. What an insult, I'll show them and keep my current iPhone4.     <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

    Happy Birthday iPhone!

Nothing more to say regarding the presentation - total perfection.
I loved the part where Steve talks about introducing three new revolutionary products and then we realise that it is all in the one device!

I still watch this on YouTube about once a month - never get tired of it :)

On the day Jobs announced the iPhone, the director of the Android team, Andy Rubin: ... “Holy crap, I guess we’re not going to ship that phone.”

Yes, Andy ... your stupid OS called android was nothing more than crap .... it was AFTER iPhone, you and your dumb boss, Eric Schmuck decided to copy iOS and iPhone ... give it out for FREE to sell Ads ... Ads ... and more Ads.

But I know January 7 is your nightmare for the rest of your miserable life. You can lie to the world but not yourself. Truth is you are nothing but a dumb copyist.

iPhone revolutionized people's lives ... google use it to sell Ads and crush people's privacy.

Fantastic presentation video %u2014 brings back all the excitement I felt at the time!

But Steve looks so well... It's so sad.

Can't you just say happy birthday to the iPhone? Why was this necessary?

Everyday since that day has been a birthday for iPhone and each and every one of millions of its owners.

Yes, it was necessary and will remain necessary for as long as google tries to shove its craps to people ....

I watched the iPhone keynote a few months ago for the second time. Along with the pride of Steve and his team what struck me was the judas-like quality of Eric Schmidt at the end of the presentation. He was our to stab Apple in the back from the beginning....

Good thing for Android because you'd have nothing to cry and whine about. Instead of just wishing the iPhone a happy birthday and comment about all the positives it's bought to people's lives, you were compelled to write a sad and pathetic post.

Well, I wasn't there but I certainly believed that the presentation marked the beginning of a new technological era.

What does that make me? Nothing more than a brilliant Monday morning quarterback. Mwa ha ha ha!

I think when he "bounded on stage" some people suspected it might mark the beginning of a new technological era, but by the time he left the stage, most people were certain of it. I say "most," because there will always be people like John Dvorak.

I surely won't ever forget the day 7 years ago, and I rarely forget the day every year since the 8th is my B-Day :)

I was following all of the live blogs on the 7th as best I could from here in Germany with a very slow 500mb internet connection, and I do believe if anyone had been watching me they would have thought I had gone crackers(!) Between jumping out of my stool and muttering ever louder, "Oh My Gawd... Oh My F**** GAWD!!" ... and cursing my Internet connection... well all I can say is that I was wreck at the end off it, and to tell the truth, I barely slept a wink until the morning of the 8th.

I hit my Mac at about 5:30 and was pleasantly surprised that the connection had sped up some, as well as to find the link to the presentation which I downloaded over the course of the day, watching it in the evening. I was even more in awe after seeing the presentation rather than just reading about it all day. As is the tradition here in Germany, people starting calling around 9:00 to wish me well on my B-Day, and all I could reply like a nut-job, "Buy Apple stock! ! !... and as much as you can afford...TODAY!". Later in the evening at an impromptu get-together party... it's all I could talk about... which I must admit, must have bored the crap outa everyone(LOL).

HOWEVER... the people that took my advise on the stock that day 7 years ago, as we all know won BIG... plus, as of that day, I became the go-to-iPhone freak and have set up 100's of iPhones and later iPads for family, friends and clients.

Many people... or I should say, The Haters... like to put people like myself down and question our seemingly religious fervor towards Apple and Steve Jobs and call us Fanatical Fanboys. So when I get the chance to tell my personal story, how not just once (with the Mac).... but 2 times (iPhone/iOS) this crazy guy with his "little company with big ideas" has not only changed my life each time, I do. How Apple and SJ has afforded me a financially secure and personally very satisfying career, is something I can't get over for being thankful for, no matter how much people like to hate on the idea of being thankful to a company or person you don't even know.

And to be even more forthright, I always get a small mistiness in the corner of my eye when I see that "bobble-head-genius-freak" with his intent stare... most of the time aimed lovingly but critically at one of his babies (as in the picture in this post). It's one of the few times in my life that I feel weird that I didn't ever take a moment to send a simple "Thanks. Get Well... whatever..." to his old email address. Not like it would matter to him... but it would've to me in hind sight... considering all of the times I have said Thank You to others for something of far less importance.

My apologies for the boring post. This time of year, and this particular event, brings out the nostalgia and bitter/sweet personal evaluation in me. :smokey:

What I'm saying is that there's a time and place for everything. This is a time to congratulate Apple on a milestone not whine about Android.

My only regret for that presentation was the closing musician, John Mayer. Really? Thinking on how revolutionary iPhone would be, and John Mayer has to be the musical ambassador we remember (or don't remember) - sigh.
I guess at the time it easily seemed like he could end up being one of those timeless artists/songwriters on the level of a Norah Jones, Adele, etc. But alas...

John Mayer was perfect to relay the message 'we just screwed the industry the way John Mayer screws models/actresses'

What a cute photo %u2013 with people using flip phones and point-and-shoot cameras to capture the iPhone display.

Apple sold a fair few at the original price, but it wasn't the runaway success that it later became.

There's decent arguments in the fast enough (assuming this means 3G rather than processor) and open enough (no third party apps at launch)

All rectified of course, to Apple's credit and benefit, but not perfect at launch.

Uh...Apple launched the iPhone before carrier subsidies were worked out. You could only buy it "off contract" so to speak (even though you could sign a contract for post-paid billing). 3 months later, the subsidies were worked out, and you could then buy an iPhone for $199, which of course was contract-only with a carrier subsidy.

Adele? Adele is a talentless pop singer. Norah Jones is an average song writer, average singer, and mediocre guitar player.

John Mayer is one of the best (currently living) guitar players, a great song writer, and an average singer. Not sure where on Earth you get your comparison skills from.
