Here's what Tim Cook said in a year end employee memo:
If there's nothing new this year but a refresh of existing products (even if it includes an iPhone with a bigger screen) there will be calls for Tim Cook to resign. And I won't be totally against it. Of course I want Apple to release stuff only when it's ready but there's only so long Cook can keep promising new stuff and only doing refreshes of existing products.
So to summarize. You're ok with apple taking it's time to perfect a product, as long as it's not too much time, in which case the company should be ran by someone who would release products at a quicker rate, as long as those too are perfect?

I think Apple should release things when they're ready but if nothing new is ready for 2014 don't tell employees that you have "big plans" customers will love. Dont't tell Wall Street that there will be new categories if in reality they won't be here until 2015 or later. That's just promising on things you can't deliver and just turns public sentiment against Apple.
Why is Cook expected to produce more and faster than Jobs? Jobs came on in 1997 yet the first new product category, the iPod, didn't come out until 2001. After that it was the iPhone in 2007. The iPad is somewhat of a fluke since they mostly had to include a larger display and rework the iOS GUI, but even that took 3 years. Since Cook took over there have been some amazing releases, especially in the Mac lines. Don't get me wrong, I want a new product category to be released this year (assuming it's ready by Apple's standards) but I don't want a half-finsihed product category to be launched simply for the sake of following some made-up timeline that never existed in the first place.
I think the market is much more competitive than it was under Jobs 2.0. And if Cook is going to promise "big plans" and/or new categories for 2014 then I think Apple needs to deliver on them. Just to be clear though I think we will get brand new stuff from Apple this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a wearables device, a mobile payment service and an Apple TV box with enhanced functionality. Plus of course a new iPhone (and one with a bigger display).

I think we'll get them this year, too, but I don't think we only get updates to current categories that it means Cook is doing a bad job. In fact, I think a lesser CEO would work for a fan-in-pan experience instead of trying to create a truly wonderful foundation for which to build upon for years (or decades) to come.

You: new products should be on my schedule. Please check off "innovate" on the to-do list.

Again I'm not suggesting Apple needs new for the sake of new, but when Tim Cook talks about big plans or new categories people expect more than just a new iPhone with a bigger display. Also I think Apple does need to be concerned about iPhone being such a large percentage of their revenues. ZDNET ran a story the other week profiling Apple, Google and Microsoft and where their revenues come from. Microsoft of course was the most diversified, but even Google was becoming more diversified with advertising as a percentage of total revenue declining. With Apple, iPhone as a percentage of total was increasing. I see this as a real issue and that's why I'm hopeful we'll see new things like wearables or something new in the service space. I don't want Apple to be known as the "iPhone company" as MG Siegler put it.

What % of rev is search/advertising for Googs? Again, it is only Feb. iPhone will be a large part of revenue.
Those fantasy mock ups are ridiculous. Just like those Apple tablet and phone mock ups circulating for years before 2007. I'm sure Phil Schiller gets a kick out of seeing them.

So why are you concerned in Feb? 10+ months to go and Cook hasn't lied about anything before.

I'm not. I said I expect new products/categories this year. Also that ZDNET chart was looking at prior year data so not sure what February has to do with anything. Without new revenue streams iPhone will be the biggest share of Apple's revenue now and 6 months from now. But I fully expect new revenue streams this year.
Lets keep in mind that since the iWatch is a new product category for Apple, it affords them the luxury of announcing it months before its availability. Just like they did with the iPhone and iPad. So even if Apple isn't ready to release an iWatch until the fall, they could easily announce and show it off at WWDC or earlier.
I am probably wrong, but, I am not sure they can do this any more, not with the likes of SameScum breathing down Apples neck. An announcement then a few months wait gives Samdung the opportunity to whip some crap together and release it around the same time.
I think Apple needs to announce and then release within weeks. I am no expert though so disregard what you have just read.

Maybe but even for Samsung, it takes time to develop something with all the mentioned capabilities. And then they'll face more lawsuits for changing the Galaxy Gear to look just like the iWatch.

I don't know, I think the Galaxy Gear would have taken them a couple months from idea to launch. Plus Apple would now have the template for them, heaps of movies/shows have watches in them, people wear them, it's prior art, you can't patent a watch face there is no other way to make it. /s
I have the feeling we will see something before WWDC or at WWDC this year.
As said many times before: WWDC will be launch pod for larger screen iPhone. I'm pretty confident they will have not only hardware, but also the app approval in place by then, or at least till september, when iOS 8 will be officially launched.
Apps, that won't have auto layouts implemented, will not pass the iPhone XL certification. Few months after that it will be mandatory for all the platforms.

The competition is more and faster these days.

I'd love to see some of those old mock ups
The best, eh.

Bigger iPhone
Bigger iPad
AppleTV with Apps
Wearable + iBeacons = Payments
Wearable + new sensors = Healthbook platform
