ibooks and macminute

Well, macminute says new ibooks on Tuesday. I don't recall them ever getting into the rumor game, so I'm guessing they feel pretty confident. No specs though....

    So...

    iBook next week

    PowerMac in February

    iMac at MWSF '02

What on earth will be released at MWNY? Just 10.2?

    From Powerpage.org:

[quote] New iBooks are going to be announced on Monday or Tuesday of next week. According to PowerPage sources, specs will be:

    iBook G3 600 MHz, 128 MB, 20GB, 12", CD-ROM - US$1199

    iBook G3 700 MHz, 128 MB, 20GB, 12", CD-RW/DVD - US$1499

    iBook G3 700 MHz, 256 MB, 30GB, 14", CD-RW/DVD - US$1799

Still no word on the video subsystem, whether it will be the same 8 MB ATI Rage 128 Mobility or whether it will be something more powerful that will support Quartz Extreme (QE) in Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar).

Hmmm, I was hoping the next rev would be to a G4!

    Indeed.

What will be left at Macworld?

They must be pretty confident of what they have up their sleeve considering last years awfully disappointing Macworld New York!

hmmm... i gotta admit, other than engineering/cooling roblems, i don't see why apple would not put a g4 in the next revision of ibook (even a 466, or whatever they had in the first revision of the tibook). and that video HAS to be updated... it's basically the same video that's in my first generation dv imac. great for it's day, but it bogs on almost everything in games and/or os x.

The above specs seem realistic to me. I would really be surprise if Apple didn't update the video card, but I doubt it will be bumped to the Quartz Extreme class (what is that, like 2x AGP and 32MB of VRAM?).

As an iBook owner I can tell you that I don't do too much with mine that a fast G3 couldn't handle. I think most iBook owners would get much more benefit from an improved video sys than in a G4, which I think would just cause more battery/heat problems.

    Just my $0.02.

At the same time, I think we need to get past the idea that the iBook is a "cheap" laptop, and thus expect less. In todays economy a $1499 notebook, is a middle of the road machine. I really do not think it is too much to expect it to outclass the Pismo that I bought in 1999. 8 megs of video is beyond a joke today.

Only 600 and 700? No Sahara yet, probably.

If it's only marketing and product differentiation that's holding them back from the Sahara, I think it's a mistake. They could easily put an 800Mhz G3 in the iBook. They just upped the screen resolution and graphics card or the TiBook, and it's a G4.

Maybe they just don't have the 800Mhz G3s ready yet.

You bought your Pismo in 1999? Most of us didn't get them until they were introduced 2/00.

    You say no Sahara yet?

Then what is the Sahara left in? Are they still using them in the G3CRT iMacs? Because I know for certain that IBM is still producing Saharas for Apple.

    Hmm.

All of Apple's new hardware (new iMac, eMac, powerbook, and powermacs) all have the G4 and the 32Meg video requirments. So, I think Apple will upgrade the video board on the iBook for the Quartz Extreme requirements. I also think there is a chance they could be upgraded with a G4 since OS X uses altivec although it probably wouldn't come with the backside cache.

That's why I'm wondering about the next iBook - if it's still at 700Mhz, it could very well still be the 750cxe.

This is a good assumption. This is IBM we're talking about where everyone seems to think "sampling" means "shipping". When you see "sampling" it means IBM is shipping test versions of processors and one has to wait 6 months to a year for real shipping parts.

    They really need to go G3 800 minimum...but better if it's 600 G4.

I know that's kind of infringing on Powerbook territory, but as someone said, we can't be treating the iBook as some cheapo laptop.

That's fine if you drop in another laptop line between the two, but since there's just the two, there needs to be a bridge model.

Besides, it may be only another 6 months before we get 1GHz and 800mhz Powerbooks and the gap will be once again widened.

Well, no offense but I hope your wrong. OS X runs better on a G4 because of altivec. The iBook needs both a G4 and a video card with minimum requirments for Quartz Extreme.

what an effing mistake G3's will be. Sorry, particularly if it gets a non fully QE compliant video card. As to the IBM, figures that they're so late with a borderline acceptable low-end part (which would be their high end part) If mot has been scratching it's ass for the past 2 years, then IBM is absolutely chafing!

I really don't think that you'll see a 32MB video card in the iBook yet. The only real choice for one for a laptop would be the same Radeon 7500 that was JUST added to the TiBook. To my knowledge, the iBook has never had the same class video card as the Powerbook. It's a major differenciating factor between the two lines, and I don't think that they want to blur that distinction.

Also, from Apple's Jaguar page, 32MB is RECOMMENDED, but it appears that the only absolute requirement is 2X AGP, so the original 16MB Radeon Mobility should still benefit some from Quartz Extreme. I think that this is the card that you will see in an updated iBook.

I run X on an ibook 600 with 640 ram and it FLIES! Geeez you amke it sound like we are running Molasas OS. Some of us are plenty happy with their g3 ibook.

Its plenty fast for me (and no i don't play games i have better things to do

But i guess since its not a "g4" I should throw it in the drink

Oh and OSX on my ibook is faster than my 400mhz g4 agp.So much for the g4 theory.
