Unlike everyone else here I don't think processor speed is the number 1 priority. Bus speed/SMP is. if they can solve that issue they'll be competitive again in notime! Also, two 800 MHz ppc's are actually cheaper than one 1 GHz ditto.
As far as speed goes I am not sure why you are so desperate for much faster machines. I can do most of the things I want without any speed problems, I can only type so fast. Video rendering is the only area where a speed boost could make a significant impact...

And music production, and games, and...
Well, to be fair, performance isn't everything, but performance versus price, pretty much IS. The current powermacs would do just fine at a lower price point (maybe with a namechange as well ).
Yep, if they have nothiing they should go all duals (on a psuedo-DDR Xserve MoBo) right now. Dual 800, dual 933, and dual 1.1 (which moto had, briefly, listed on their site, but was then taken down).
All reasonable guesses. Towers will be of completely new design with the keyboard coming with a built-in large pad to use Inkwell. Two-button mouse will be standard (it will be cordless). Bluetooth, of course as well. There will be one additional digital device unveiled. Probably a cell-phone (iCall).
If moto doesn't have the new G4 ready for MWNY it probably won't be all that long before it is. I think they should just release the low end and middle machines, and announce the high end but not ship (or take orders) 'till it's ready.
Remember the articles of TheRegister about the G5(could be G4) late 2001.
They mentioned that the G5 was ready for production in early 2002. They said it would go 1,2 ; 1,4; 1,6 and they even mentioned working prototypes of 2,4. Maybe Moto has made a stock of these chips so Apple can finish off there Mac 10.2.
If all of this were true, then Apple would be in a stage of happyness , so as us.
I doubt that this is a great fact, because we all know that certain sites can fool us.
Maybe you can use this, but don't get your hopes up. I think 1.2ghz will be the max and some other goodies.

If they were in production in early 2002, why didnt they relase them instead of the dual 1ghz models. Or maybe at MW Tokyo ( I forget when MW Tokyo was...)
It's all very well harping on about processor speed, but really 10.2 offers us a huge boost without the need to update the hardware.

10.2 offers a huge boost as far as the response time of the _OS_ is concerned, it wont make your Photoshop none the speedier in calculation-intensive tasks.

If you use your Mac only for typing than that's fine. But since the computer world is based on evolving and getting faster hardware every x months for the same price it's kinda stupid to say "oh, the stuff Apple makes right now will do for a while". Well, it wont. People want performance. Design shops want it, scientists want it and kids playing games want it. (Apple is the only computer manufacturer neglecting the fact that the computer games industry is bigger than the movie industry already...)
Now I don't know about you, but I'd like to make my raytraced renderings faster than I do now - I render high-resolution images for print. A speed increase of 50% would bring the time I spend drinking coffee during the renderings down from 4 to maybe 2 hours - and that's healthy. I want my InDesign to work at high resolution with a 300 dpi, 50mb layered Photoshop image in realtime, I want to be able to make Flash MX presentations with quicktime movies embedded and a few transparent layers of text on top of it and run it without hiccups. And occasionally I would probably love to play Doom 3 in the evening to relax from a day of work.
I can imagine there are a bunch more areas where speed is needed. For those people who don't need a speedy machine Apple has the great iMac line. I've seen it run OSX and it's great. But people who do serious work with their Apple computers are thankful for every second they save with a given task, because at the end of the day those seconds add up and save a lot of time. And time is money. Or so I am told.
I must be one of the lone voices who think that we'll see the G5 intro this summer. I don't know whether it will be at MWNY or not, but my time frame would be in late-August. I think it's a very reasonable assumption.
Even if we don't see the G5s, I still think we'll see a much faster system bus and video card architecture. I don't know just how fast thus bus will be, but I'll venture a guess that it will be twice as fast as the XServe. I think we will move into the 8X AGP graphics card world.
Either way, OS X 10.2 will scream. I think the bus speeds of the XServe is more indicative of what we'll see on the next PowerBook, more than anything. I also think these are reasonable predictions.
Lastly, I think Apple's trend of not announcing pure revisions at major conferences is a breath of fresh air and a little relieving. A lot of people critical of Apple in the past quietly assumed that Apple was behind the curve on technology, so much so they had to wring it all out at a trade show.
Have you noticed the slew of updates from Apple lately? There's been one every week it seems for the past month! Something is building.....

I too believe the so called "G5" will debut this summer.
You may remember I also thought it would be out this February, but alas I was wrong. But the hardware I was talking about was real, and it must surely be announced soon...
Don't count on it being called the G5 though, or even that it contains Moto's so called "G5" processor.
This thing might not even be called a Macintosh!!
Some things you can take for granted: DDR, faster Bus etc.
But Apple have done some very clever sideways thinking, and produced some innovative solutions to the current gigahertz gap.
The result is a dramatic increase in performance for rendering, encoding, and audio processing.
When the specs are released, some of you will go bananas that it is not enough. We've been waiting for 500Mhz RapidIO, DDR333 yada yada yada.
Apple have done cool things with the architecture (no-one has come close to talking about them) and they will make this thing the fastest graphics box you can buy for under 20k.
Also, forget the Xserve as a clue to the spec of the new Box. The Xserve is a box to host web sites and serve school kids.
The machine that's coming will come in a desktop factor AND rack mount for render farms.
But that's not all - even desktop machines, when connected via gigawire, will SHARE processing, using any idle machine in the cluster to speed up your machine!!!

Hey, Mr. Guy above me...how do YOU know the G5 won't ship this year.
Care to back that up with some solid info' pal?

'The Nearly 'Powermacs'?
(let's slot them in the market at £800 slot with all those end of lifed cheap 1.4 gig Athlons, eh?)
Lemon Bon Bon
Yes it is.
That's why the Apple overall 'Nearly' 'Power' Mac sales are shrinking.
Lemon Bon Bon
Then you've obviously never done the kind of 3D work that leaves a 1 gig DDR, 266 mhz bus, 1.6 Xp Athlon bleeding and crawling on the floor...
(What's the name of this thread again, 'Crystal B*ll*cks?! Oops, sorry Amorph, I said the word 'B*ll*cks'...oops...done it again...)

I'd like to see:
low end, 2x800 MHz
middle, 2x1 GHz
but I doubt apple will do it.

If speed wasn't important, I'd still be blissfully happy on my Commodore 64.
