what chip for the new i mac, G4 or IBM chip ?

We can be almost sure that the i mac will evoluate soon, nobody know what will be is new design or if he will include a new screen (especially a LCD screen).

Do you think that this new I mac will have a G4 or the new chip from IBM code name sahara, called 750 FX (a chip that can reach one ghz, is 25 % faster than the previous G3 at equal speed, but without any SIMD unit ?). What is your advice, and what is your preference ?

im hoping for a g3 to keep the costs down, + what if they dont come out with g5? the imac and pm will have the same processor at similar mhz ... or ghz

When the iMac first came out it had a G3 233. The low end PM had a G3 233. It wouldn't be unpresidented. A G4 would be nice & I doubt it would cost much more then a G3.

People keep repeating this "Sahara is 25% faster than previous G3 at equal clock speed" stuff. If you'll actually go back and look at what IBM said, they said that some changes let it run *up to* 25% faster "in bus intensive operations". They nowhere claim that speedup overall.

i think it will stay a G3 for a while, especially when they got a ghz G3 coming (eventually), but probalby (maybe) switch to G4 when powermacs become G5

I believe that Apple can totally go with a G4 in the iMacs nomatter when the G5 comes.

As was stated before, it wasn't long ago that both iMacs and PowerMacs had the same processor, and that can happen again.

Apple can introduce new iMacs at 4 - 600 mhtz and leave plenty of room for PowerMacs to go up to 1.2 ~ 1.7 or whatever the rumors are saying.

I do not for a second believe this is likely, however.

I think iMacs are going to be stuck in the desert for awhile.

Once the PowerMacs go G5 the iMac will go G4. The question is when that will happen and how fast they will be once they do.

when the imac debuted, apple boasted that even though it was a "consumer" machine, it had the same processor as its high-end pro computers. The imac and and powermac both sold well while sharing the same type or processor. Im sure if apple can manage to keep costs down and put a descent speed (700+ mhz ) G4 in the imac, they will. The powermac will still have breathing room over the imac because of its massive expandability and other specs that surpass the imacs (bus speed, graphics chip, hard drives sizes, ect.)

    iMacs rule!

For $1500 there is no better machine on the planet.

Anyway, I think they should put in whichever chip gives the higher clock speed. If they have the same clock speed, whichever is cheaper. It's all about marketing with the iMacs. 95% of all potential iMac buyers could not be able to tell the difference between a 700MHz G3 and 700MHz G4. However, they can tell the difference between numbers on a spec sheet.

My gut is that we'll get 800MHz G3's in the new iMacs. Apple's philosophy is probably "Well, we have a new G3, and the G4 can always come later, so let's just shove a G3 in with a small MHz increase, okay?".

I want 1.13GHz Apollo DDR Widescreen HDTV DVD R LCD Flat Panel as much as the next guy, but hey, we can't have everything! Apple is a smart company. They realize that as long as they give users an LCD and a small MHz boost, they will get many sales. Giving a larger MHz boost is not worth it...for each extra 100MHz, people will pay less and less, and the cost of the chips is more and more. The sweet spot of cost/sales is probably somewhere in the 700-900 range at most.

    Apollo G4 for the iMac.

Yes, the G3 could stay in the iMac, but if the Powermacs go G5, then I suspect the iMacs go G4. That leaves the G3 for the iBook.

As long as the iBook stays small and light with good battery life, I don't care what it's got in it.

    (we're talking about iMacs here)

One problem with the G4s (current ones anyway). They are pretty hot. Check out the heat sink in the quicksilvers. The iMac has been fan-less for a while. And if it is going to be LCD, I don't think a G4 would fit that cooling profile. Unless that G4 happened to be an Apollo...

    Or a 7410. Or a 7440.

Dude if they can put it in the Titanium they can put it in the iMac.

    FAST G3. Trust me.
  • Reply 17 of 34
The 7410 gets very hot too. I would not want to be hearing the sound of the fan in my Titanium coming from the new LCD iMacs, and I doubt Apple will all of a sudden ADD a fan.

I think we will see Apollo G4s in the new iMacs. They are small, cooler, and cheaper, and the G5 gives way for a new frontier of performance in the PowerMacs, and also probably helps drive the cost of the G4 down as well. The G3 will stay in the iBook for a while and help Apple to drop the price even more and also to allow for a larger screen size at the current price points (or lower). That's my guess. IBM's PPC 750FX is not even beginning to sample until February, so I doubt this will be a likely candidate for the iMac.

I hope you mistyped that, because if Apple cuts their CPU speed from what it is I'll never deal with them again.
