HyperTransport and Apple!
From Think Secret:
"Apple will also use Tuesday to announce news of its own. Details of just what will be announced are sketchy, and at this point Think Secret doesn't feel confident enough to report the few details we have. From what we are being told, it doesn't appear to be an "earth-shattering" development. We'll keep you informed of new information."
HyperTransport: Come visit the HyperTransport Consortium June 4th (Tuesday) through 6th.
Hummm....
I apologize for going around the "Apple Event Tues, Tablet PC?" thread, this (HT) is what this is about IMHO. Apple would use a MacWorld event for something like this, at least there would be QT coverage if something as earth shattering as an Apple Tablet PC were on the table.
I think that this is about HyperTransport, which is only earth shattering to us gear heads. I know that there are more implications to HT, but for now it will be earth shattering to a few, well informed, and well reasoned, nerds like us.

It doesn't make sense to essentially declare, "We're going to use HyperTransport, but we're not telling you when or in what yet."

True.. but maybe he'll say "We're going to use HyperTransport, now let's take a look at what we're going to put this great technology into... as we all know, up til now, time travel has been relegated to the realms of science fiction.. today we are changing all of that..."

Now THAT is a PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
I wonder which market segment that would be targeted at?? Could this finally get Apple back into big Enterprise

That's what I would think, but Starfleet already has too big a presence. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
Really, though, everyone knows that Apple is part of this. It just isn't big enough to warrent Jobs doing interviews. Second, Apple would wait until MWNY to debut a technology like this.
More than likely, the whole HT thing is just chance timing. I could be wrong. . . <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />

Not that I'm disagreeing with you.
From Think Secret:
<strong>"Apple media relations has been lining up interviews for Jobs and only a few days ago found out it would be competing with the Sculley announcement."</strong>
So much for no media. According to Think Secret

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear; I do that sometimes.
What I meant:
Why would Apple arrange interviews with the media regarding something that is already officialy and publicly known?
I know that what I said came out a little goofy, so please accept my apology. Thanks.
I wager it will be a concrete product announcement of some sort. Now whether that's hardware or software, If we find out anything it will be within 48 hours of the event?

Apology accepted. It is quite ironic that a SpeechGod could sometimes be unclear
I do agree with you though, you are probably right. Ya' know the great thing about having Steve back is that we have NO IDEA what he could be doing or saying. What a showman!

<strong>Actually, HT (or RapidIO) would be huge news. BadAndy over at Arstechnica has been working out a bunch of stuff on the performance limitations of the G4, and it comes down to memory bandwidth and some crappy OS X stuff with the cache. Motorola has more or less stated the G4 is sticking with the MPX bus, which means it will be great for their other customers, but won't be getting any better for us, although it might go to 166MHz. So, if Apple announces it will use HyperTransport, they're bypassing the MPX bus limit and breaking into some territory with great room for performance improvement. It would also signal a new processor, if not a new family. So it would be big news to us, and let us know something important would be happening at MWNY.</strong><hr></blockquote>
OK now why would Steve, aside from being an all around nice guy, tell us "I'm making the PowerMac you can buy today Really Stinking Obsolete? in a month? Doesn't he want to sell machines for the next month?
Anyway, if the HT web site is telling people to come visit between the 4th an 6th, that fits in rather nicely with the theory that we don't yet know whether Jobs will stick to his original press date, opting instead to show up Sculley and announce a day sooner or a day later perhaps.
If they do make a HT announcement, there can be only one implication - Power Macs. Possibly they could announce them with the basic specs, available at the end of June. Which means OS X would likely steal the show at MWNY. Jaguar-city. Released, not demoed. That would fit in with what that knuckle-head mole rate dweeb said a couple weeks ago...
Hrmmm. This is one of the few developments that warrants some serious speculation (when you tie everything together I mean).
And Bob, the answer is: because he's not selling them either way. I bet PM sales are dropping through the floor about now - even with the new promotions.

We need to ask ourselves, "Will 10.2 be enough to hold together MWNY?" It's just for Jobs to announce the "G5" or G5 outside an expo is hard to believe. Also, like you said, Apple would not sell another tower until the new PowerMac [insert processor here] ships.

Not sure what it means when MoTo says they are staying with the MPX bus on the G4. Doesn't mean they're not working on a another version of the G4 with a different bus to be used as a precursor to when the G5 comes out (got to practice somewhere - the G4+). Who knows what they are doing; only MoTo and Apple, and they ain't tellin. They got an xserve board with ddr and some new controllers, something is happening!?!
It would be hard to believe that apple put all that money out for a new board for a server , not exactly their top seller to get a return on investment for their investors, and you don't want to screw your stock holders, they start selling and your screwed.

The statements from Moto that I've seen quoted say nothing about the G4 "sticking with MPX"... instead they say that "MPX isn't going to get big changes, except perhaps a bump to 166 MHz". This doesn't preclude a version of the G4 with an alternative interface in addition to or in place of the MPX (like RIO or HT). It also doesn't preclude a version of the G4 with an onchip memory controller. As for the Xserver's new chipset, it could either have been developed for the PowerMac and never used (thus using it in Xserve gets something back out of the R&D cost), or it could already be designed to include whatever the new interface is.
Won't know until it gets here...

Current promos suggest that Apple will not intro new powermacs before MWNY. However if Apple did announce new Powermacs next week, there would be plenty left for MWNY. Jaguar, new digital device, iPod revision, possibly new iMac models (17" and 19" widescreen LCD rumor), and possibly the eMac for general consumption. That is more than enough to talk about at MWNY.
But I agree that Apple would never announce a technology on its own....Jobs likes to focus on what tech allows people to do with their Macs, not on specs. Hypertransport is meaningless to most people. Thus, if hypertransport is ever used on a Powermac, then I expect that IF it is even mentioned by jobs, it will be only one slide in his presentation.
Care to expand on this?
Lemon Bon Bon <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />
Apple seems as though it is really trying to break the mold its announcements usually run on. And if they want to release as many products and devices there is no way they can do MW SF/NY as the release venues. It is great if it coincides, but they can't plan around it.
The Keynotes of MW hold very little press value in the long term other than set unrealistic expectations. The MW release of the original G4 raised MW expectations to the stratosphere. They are still suffering from it. MW or no MW hulabalu the Products remain the same. As Apple continues to accelerate a month of lost sales heavily outweighs the "Splash Factor." I would like to think Apple would rather have a "predictable/semi-unpredictable" image as opposed to "totally unpredictable."
They are venturing further into the consumer market. And while their own products strength is the "Insanely great" the consumer as a whole does not like surprises when it comes to their computers. How many "I am gonna wait for < the revolutionary sliced bread computer> model until I buy a new one threads are there? How many times do you hear it? Isn't it always in the top 3 consumer questions in the buying process? Perhaps the consumer market concern is less so than the business market, but it is a present concern. Technology in general is a tough market as of now and Apple still has a small shadow from its "doomed days."
As others have noticed Apple seems to have taken a liking the continual media attention rather than the MW hurrah every 6 months.
So perhaps we will see more continual technology announcements that keeps the press happy on a streaming basis.
Periodic technology announcements would give us all more fuei for wild speculation anyhow.
So what of Tuesday...
I hope for a underwhelming announcement that means little to the consumers but gives the technologically impressed reason to cheer Apple products even more.
Still, I expect nothing therefore I am never disappointed.
