Make sure it's not the fan. If not, then it's probably your HD. Open that sucker up and see if the sound is coming from the HD. If so, then you can pick up a 10 GB HD for less than $100 that's 7200 RPM, faster than the HD in there now, which is probably 5400 rpm.
Anyways, back everything up. Back up your system folder, too, this will make everything MUCH easier later.
Slip in the new HD, format it, and install your Mac OS. Then use your old system folder backup to install any special extensions you may have had, and to replace all your preferences. Then install your apps, and you're good to go.
Now, you can do one of two things with the old HD.
1. Sell it on eBay. Some unsuspecting bastard will take it off your hands and probably get burned with data loss. LOL.
2. Take it outside, place on a soft substrate, preferable grass, and either A) shoot it, or whack it with a sledghammer.
Did you ever replace the original hard drive with an IBM 75 GXP model? :: shudders ::
The click of death is a gruesome thing, especially when it destroys 17.4 gigs of MP3s and 12 years worth of written documents....

Now you've got me scared. I put one of those drives in as a slave about a month ago. Occaisionally, while working, I notice a click from the drive. It sounds exactly like the click it makes when I put my Mac to sleep and the drive spins down? just not as loud. So far everything keeps working. Could it be going bad? I installed it about the same time as 10.1.2, so I thought maybe it was something to do with the OS upgrade.
I was watching TechTV Canada awhile back (November?) and they talked about how you can tell if a HD is failing, and post links to soundclips. I have the soundclips, and have posted then on my Mac.com homepage.
If it is one of those sounds, then well your in trouble.
