perhaps this is just premature, but I'm hoping it comes back up with at least two lines 'temporarily unavailable'

Then again it could just be my piece of SH!T computer.

    Type in apple.com and nothing.

Maybe they are updating the store and the product grid.

Maybe we will see blank quadrants where the iMacs and Powermacs should be.

When I type in the URL it works fine.

Leaving blank spaces on the product grids would be a true techno cock tease I think.

my mac.com address isn't retrieving email, either. looks like an akamai hiccup again. (doesn't apple use akamai for all their server work, or is that only the live webcasts?)

That's weird. A few minutes ago, I was able to use the link on the image for the Macworld picture and 'browse' through all of the main pictures for the site. I even found an old Beige G3/233 ad they used to use on the page.

    Now nothing's working. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

testing the new layout? Why do that with the real site? Nope. There will be new data in a few minutes.

Jesus christ you guys! I post here, start a new thread, come back, and there are already 17 freaking replies to this one! Wow. Busy boards.

I have been accessing the Apple Store all morning BTW, checking on different things, then it all of a sudden wouldn't work.

I've got it to partially load - the buttons on the top loaded 3/4 once...

    Odd.

apple uses akamai all over the place; not akamai's edgesuite though but rather their static content delivery service.

in plain old english: the webinfrastructure of apple is responsible for answering your webrequests whereas akamai is responsible for delivering all non-text objects on the page.

even simpler stated: apple screwed up, not akamai.

I get the main page again too, but the store itself stays down. I wonder if Apple will be forced to debut some stuff early to stem a millions strong flood of rabid mac rumor mongers hitting, and re-hitting, the site every 5 seconds.

I propose a new method of getting mac rumors, let's flood Steve into submission!
