The narcissism is beyond anything you can imagine. People sit at SB for hours on end, working on huge spreads of god knows what. It's not unusual to see one person sitting at a table for four, papers spread out, laptop atop the entire mess. A home away from home. Hard-working people with important jobs, obviously.
I'm being facetious but I wonder if these are the same people who jog on major roads in the rain...
For me it became part of my routine to get me up and out of the house at 5am, when they open. As you can imagine they aren't very busy at that time.
It's the solution I devised when I was in recovery. After being bedridden for an extended period this forced maneuver helped facilitate getting back into a productive and effective routine with a certain quality of life.

No kidding, find a fucking library or work from home if you dont have anywhere else. The worst is when I'm meeting someone at Starbucks for a drink and to socialize, and the entire place is filled with people on their laptops in dead silence, who stare you down when you start talking. Noone else is making a sound so it feels like the entire place is listening to your convo. When did starbucks become a fucking library?
Do they make cases for other brands or do any other brands work with these mats?
The cases that work with the charging mat are proprietary and you don't have a choice of style. It's bulky, black, slippery, and smudges easily, according to end-user reviews.
A frequent complaint is that these mats are rather picky about alignment and often won't charge even when the magnet indicates contact. The user is force to wiggle the device around until the wireless charging circuit is connected. This makes using the device while charging a bit dicey.
Notably these mats do not output enough power to charge tablets.
I foresee this two-year rollout being terminated early, then the mats removed after the novelty has worn off and they go unused. This will force store managers to install unsightly plugs in the countertops.

I can't remember ever being in a quiet Starbucks. The music they play (lately a lot of 80s alternative for Summer) keeps that from happening.
The only times I've seen any issues with people being "loud" are when they are 1) playing a video on their CE without headphones (one time I think it was porn), and 2) when a homeless(?) guy was on his cellphone having an argument, which he had to do because it had to be plugged in to be used, which was also ridiculous because the outlets are under the booths about a foot off the ground so his 18"(?) cord made it seem even more crazy than it would have otherwise been.
PS: The first Harry Potter book was written at a coffee shop.
I have a house in Irvine, but I don't live there full time. I split my time about 50/50 between US and Panama and schedule it to get the best weather in each location. So right now I'm in the states while it is poring rain in Central America.
That's dumb. When I go to spend long periods of time at a coffee shop, I'm ALWAYS there to do work or study on my laptop.
I never go to a coffee shop just to socialize with random strangers.
Kudo to him for letting people loiter though, that's legit.
Why should a coffee shop offer you a place to study for long periods of time? What's in it for them?
In the case of my friend's restaurant, the patrons are not random strangers. It is people who live nearby, kids attend same schools, work nearby, belong to same church, already know or recognize one another, etc. They are repeat customers on a daily basis and they buy more than just coffee. This is a warm and friendly meeting place for the neighborhood. It is also really high end for a coffee shop. Huge Italian chandeliers, with coffered ceilings, travertine floors, gourmet everything, including the highest quality freshly roasted coffee that scores in the 90s, not like the un-scorable coffee at SB. There is also deluxe leather furniture, a table wait staff as well as counter ordering. They also have a working custom coffee roaster in view. It is a very comfortable and visually appealing shop. Much nicer than some cookie cutter franchise.
The word dumb, is definitely not a description I would use to characterize the owner. He is a third generation coffee professional and is very well liked, well known internationally amongst the specialty coffee industry and associations, and also quite successful financially. I think he must be doing something right.
That 3 amps gets divided by 2. That's good for phones, but not enough for a tablet.
Not sure. I think it is 3.23 Amp under full load. I would expect it to work well for an iPad and a phone at the same time since one would probably be idle while the other was active. it is not like each side is restricted to 1.5. Each side is capable of the full 3 Amps. In any case it is better than the wireless charging pad because that won't work at all for an iPad.
Doesn't Apple have some sort of "smart" wireless patent? I'm not talking about the Smart Cover patent, but one where another wireless signal (Bluetooth?) provides some type of data transfer (validation of an Apple device? modulate the amount of charging current based on the device?) prior to charging. Or maybe for wireless docking. The link below is the best I could find, but I thought the patent went into more detail than what I seem to remember.
Seattle - started going to Starbucks in the 80's when they had only the Pike Place Market store - the ambiance is gone
- or Last Exit on Brooklyn (Seattle U district) in the 80's - the place put you on a trip back to the 60's - coffee, food, smoke this listen to that smoke that do this watch that - it's gone thanks to UW expansion ...ok sorry...sidetracked -
Starbucks corporate is not part of real life & real coffee....
I'll pay whatever Apple wants but the rest of my life is reasonable qvc.com if it didn't work i wouldn't waste our time with this post.
- HALO RF ID Wallet & 3000 MA Portable phone charger - e225715
low tech site but this works and you can charge anywhere - includes 5 pin & others
to recharge battery unit - USB connection to your Mac - battery fits in wallet with room for more.
RFID - your plastic is safe from scammers with scanner smart phones!
Would seem to make more sense to have unobtrusive 30-pin and Lightning connectors at each seat/table, so all iPhone users could take advantage, not just the handful that own a Duracell case???
Hard to see many iPhone users swayed towards a Duracall case just because they can now wirelessly charge at a Starbucks.
Duracell is likely subsidizing the cost of the charging stations in the hope they will encourage people to buy the cases. This will not be successful because it's very likely wireless charging using competing standards will be commonplace before they complete their rollout.
It would make zero sense for Starbucks to provide charging cables. Now if they installed USB ports at every table, that would provide a simple solution that would serve every single customer regardless of which phone they have. But this would cost them money without generating any revenue, so it's not likely to happen.

This is the strongest indication the iPhone 6 will have wireless charging.
More an indication Duracell is having hard time getting their version accepted so they offered a deal to Starbucks that Starbucks couldn't refuse....

It’s an indication of absolutely nothing. Induction is hugely wasteful.
For those of us keeping score at home, that’s the 10th iPhone.
Best tagline.

Or that Duracell said to Starbucks: "we got this idea to increase adoption of our power mats, and you get to offer your customers a new service."
Assume Apple doesn't share its secrets with ANYONE.
No, but I did assume Apple's close ties with Starbucks, and this would be something Apple would do to tie into the culture.
.
Claus?
No, Did not know what Santee Claus was until Tallest called me on it.
Because Santee and Santa sound so much alike? Fail!
You’ve obviously never been to the Midwest.

Curious why they chose Powermat instead of some other competing standard like Qi.
