I still don't know why Apple TV doesn't have native BBC iPlayer, 4OD, ITV Player and Demand 5 apps as standard in the UK? If it did, I'm sure an A-TV would seem a much more appealing purchase to folks in the UK. Even a PS3 has all these options.
Lots of smart TVs have those apps too, so I don't see how it can be an issue with the channels, must be that Apple don't want them to do it, or haven't got round to it yet - I suspect they're focusing on channels that are either US only, or can be provided internationally. More than a bit annoying.

Our family has started using a ChromeBox a lot more then the Apple TV because of the amount online content in Europe that just isn't available on it. A lot of these online TV and media streaming sites still use Flash as well, something that's built in and works quite well on the ChromeBox. We even cancelled our cable and are using Zattoo solely for our local Swiss TV, it even streams the channels in better quality then we were getting with cable. Not to mention that recording a show for later viewing is so easy to do with Zattoo. The kids have also ripped pretty much every single BlueRay we have and uploaded them to their Google Drive and OneDrive accounts, which I have to say streams them pretty flawlessly too the ChromeBox and even their mobile devices. Though I have a sneaky suspicion that my kids have shown their friends this as I've see my son logged into other shared Google Drives streaming their movies. I told them as long as they don't copy the movies to their cloud storage I don't have a problem with it, thank goodness Switzerland doesn't go after people for this or I would have to save up some bail money for those little pirates.
I know Google is sore subject around here but I have to say their ChromeOS products are pretty cool when connected to a TV. Not to mention cheap, I think I paid 140 bucks for the Asus, then upgraded it to 8GB, neat little guy, just something different.

In an alternate universe Apple released an Apple TV SDK four years ago when they switched it to iOS. How great that alternate universe must be now.
