Okay, so then I'm not just imagining it then? I have an older G3 B&W,(picking up a 933 on Friday I haven't actually heard it running, I mean it's not like buying a Windoz box where you have to see that it actually starts and runs before you take it
Does anyone know what the db level of these machine is like?
I mean I don't really care all that much, we have the music cranked anyway... I mean you can't edit video with out tunes...
Yeah they do kinda sound like jets....
Ever heard a Falcon gaming system? Now that a loud machine... City bylaw people come and write ticket when that thing is on
Okay, I think it is time for some sleep. I just read my last post. Nice use of the English language...
will anyone out there say, "it isn't really that bad." i just ordered a QS 800 and am growing somewhat concerned about the noise. Is it louder than an average pc? and which fan generates most of the noise?

You just ordered a QuickSilver? Less than a month before when there will be an update, and weeks before the special promos and price drops on current G4s?

while this is beside the point, yes. i was debating over waiting, but i decided not to for a few reasons.
1) $125 rebate on existing Edu discount (i am a student)
2) $100 rebate on HP printer (i got the 920 for $94, so free printer)
3) Free firefly 5GB external drive
4) $100 of HP Digital Camera (i got the 315xi)
total price paid: $1691 (800 g3, dvd/cd-rw upgrade)
I couldn't imagine that i would be able to get that much for my money any other time, so its all good. perhaps a bad decision, but i want a computer (right now i have none). Anyhow, how loud are they?
I can't believe how people are helplessly stuck, but since no one suggests the obvious...: What is so hard with changing the loud fans? You get a perfect (temp driven speed) fan set for 50 to 80 bucks. Absolutely worth the money. Changing the whole machine is a real overkill imho! :-)

I really wanted to change the fans however...
My dual 800 had an extended Applecare warranty, and Apple customer support told me that if I changed anything to do with the fan operation or cooling my warranty would be invalidated...also I didn't fancy messing around with electronics and wiring etc.
It is very strange, but I expected a huge speed hit on the cube over the dualie, but, in general OS X stuff the cube IS quicker...including window resizing etc (I have timed it, because I didn't believe it either!)....perhaps it is something to do with the drivers ATI driver sover the Nvidia stuff?
Anyway I got two cubes (and money left over for mods) out of the proceeds of the DP, and bearing in mind I'm typing this in complete silence, even with 2 G4s in the room I'm unbelievably impressed...
I am really tempted to say that I will upgrade the cubes until they can upgrade no more (!) rather than get a fan cooled/noisy Powermac...unless it *ridiculously* redesigned and speedy...
the fan on my QS G4 733 does not bother me.
period.
I usually have music on but don't always.
A CD spinning up is MUCH louder, I sleep with the computer on next to me when it isn't even in sleep and is rendering some video when it is 90° out.
It's not that bad.

that's what i wanted to hear! if only apple could quiet that spinning. any ideas how apple could do away with the noise of a spinning cd? perhaps a 0.25X Cdrom. hmmmmm
