YES! My neighbor, who was a ham, built a very nice color TV from HeathKit. According to Wikipedia, the company is trying to make a comeback. Wiki is never wrong...

I tried building some kind of electronics kit (may not have been Heath) when I was about 12. I built a very nice package of burned-off PCB traces, melted transistors, crooked, peeling labels and mis-drilled panel holes. It took a lot of time, effort and money to create that pile of landfill, but it taught me a valuable lesson: better to buy off-the-shelf products when one can, and only do custom when necessary.

Privacy will be a major issue with HealthKit. Any breach will be blown out of all proportion and lead to mistrust. A gold mine for advertisers perhaps, but one their greedy little fingers must be kept well off.

Ditto HomeKit, come to think of it.

Goldmine for advertisers? How about the financial windfall for insurers and credit providers, the money guys. Indications of potential heart issues even tho no doctor has diagnosed it? Borderline high blood pressure showing? Your credit card/loan providers would dearly love to get early word on that, and so would insurers.

Thank goodness we have HIPPA. Even my daughter couldn't pick up CT-scan disc for me without my written and witnessed OK. The health providers know how seriously the law is enforced. i wouldn't worry in the least that Apple or even Google for that matter would be expected to do less or treated lightly if they breached those laws.

With that said I would not be very surprised to see Apple or Google to become part of or establish a new health information exchange. Insurers and health providers pool information on clients so that no matter where they go their complete history of tests, diagnoses, treatments and claims is available to health providers and member insurers. In fact I expect that to happen.

By the way there is a window left open for developers who want to share collected health data with 3rd parties. If the sharing is for "medical research purposes" (?) it can be allowed as long as the user has opted in. Otherwise developers risk having their app removed from the App Store.

    That, is adorable!

MicrosoftSamsung even Google, if you can believe that have the same policy, it's standard practice, not to mention obvious as no one in their right mind would use the service otherwise.

Ha and Google would never bypass user wishes.

I assume you refer to "Do Not Track". Seems most large search providers ingore it including Bing and Yahoo. There is no actual benefit from Do Not Track user settings for frequent web travelers, nor have any companies been successfully sued for ignoring it AFAIK. In fact I'd guess it's ignored more often than honored.

Those that think Google was sued by the FTC for ignoring it are mistaken. They got dinged for the incorrect advice they offered Safari users. Still I don't think it's right to ignore user settings. Many web sites and search services would disagree with me.

I would assume it has to do with caloric consumption. From the dictionary:

calorie |?kæl(?)ri(abbr.: cal.)noun (pl. calories)either of two units of heat energy.• (also small calorie)(abbr.: cal)the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water through 1 °C (now usually defined as 4.1868 joules).• (also large calorie)(abbr.: Cal)the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water through 1 °C, equal to one thousand small calories and often used to measure the energy value of foods.

As far as the carrot goes, your guess is as good as mine. (I know you can buy caffeinated soap, shampoo, other edibles, etc. so maybe there is someone oujt there selling "caffeinated carrots" - kinda catchy).

Wow! Smoked, honey roasted, plain? My neighbor is a dick but all he ever does is not take care of his yard. I used to live next to a turkey... ¡

Caffeine is an anti-calming agent that works by blocking the inhibitory signal Adenosine so that adrenaline can be a stronger stimulant signal. Carrots by providing Vitamin A which magnifies thyroid hormone may increase caffeine's effectiveness by increasing adrenaline receptors.

Very interesting info, thanks. Since you were able to explain its drug effects so well, can you possibly explain why caffeine has a calming, focusing effect on those with ADHD? Seems to be the opposite of your explanation and I see, first hand, how caffeine (1-2 cups of strong coffee) can snap my son back from being scattered and fidgety.

Stimulants work in a large portion (as much as 80%) of those diagnosed with ADHD/ADD but in others they can be a disaster.

A relative of mine had a very difficult time finding something that worked for him and it turned out to be an unusual cocktail of anti-depressant, and some other supplements. Made a night and day difference for him. It is tough to tell what is going to work sometimes.

Might be a bit off topic but made me realize that if there is not patentable, big money products out there then do the research yourself and try anything that won't make you worse. While in college several of my friends and I met the nicest guy with severe Cerebal Palsy. He was constantly shaking his hand  and rocking his head but managed to get by well in classes. We would take him out to one of the local drinking establishments (he walked over with us from his dorm with crutches) and order him ONE large beer and a straw. He would start sucking on that straw and by the time he was ? done with it he could put his crutches on the floor, and most of the tremors had stopped. By the time he hit the 50% mark he can both ambulate and vocalize normally. We would spend the next 45-60 mins with him while slowly drank the last but after about 90 minutes since starting he started to retrograde. Even though it was a tough time when that would happen (more for us, than him, I think) we would not have given up that Tuesday nite ritual for anything for the 4 years he was in school and graduated on time Cum Laude. He has lived a very productive life since and I get updates about him every so often.

Caffeine is great for certain types of headaches, also. There are simple solutions to complex maladies, which we consume everyday, but big pharma don't want you to know that.
