So basically an iPad that can make phone calls. And you don’t care how stupid you look holding something that to your ear?
No, an iPad is much, much larger and impractical to carry around. I don't make judgments about people that are not affecting mine or someone I care about lives. Makes me a happier person. I like to be around people who have different opinions than mine and accept others for whom they are. You learn more by hearing other people's thoughts and get along better.
I think Apple will NOT put the 5S internals into a plastic shell. The plastic body iPhone denotes an iPhone destined for 2nd tier markets and eventually third-world markets. Putting the TouchID and 64-bit CPU into plastic is overkill for these markets and would cheapen the value of these cutting edge technologies. So there will be no plastic version of the 5S.

No discounted iPhone 5S.
I think Apple will not sell the 5S at a discounted price, for the same reason it didn't disc out the 5 in its gorgeous aluminum case. The 5S in its current premium case at a discounted price would reduce Apple's margins on the device by too much while also cannibalizing iPhone 6 sales; the 5S, with TouchID, 65-bit CPU, great camera and duotone flash would be an attractive alternative to the the 6, especially for anyone who prefers the smaller form factor handset. Apple would be leaving money on the table and diminishing the premium status of the 6.

iPhone 5S gets NFC, potentially updated CPU and camera, new 6-series designation.
I think apple updates the internals of the 5S and gives is a new designation, perhaps a 6-series designation. My reasoning here is that the 5S, with TouchID, needs to support iPayments, but without NFC it won't be able to. So Apple needs to at least add an NFC chip to this phone. I believe Apple will want to make a big push into iPayment and continuing to sell a TouchID-enanble handset that doesn't support iPayments would confuse consumers. So anything that has TouchID going forward will need to include NFC. Adding just NFC might be an option, but why not also bump the CPU and maybe even the camera to match the larger iPhone 6? This is the strategy Apple took with the iPad, internals are the same, leaving customers a simple choice of form factor (9.7" versus 7.9"). Updating all the internals allows Apple to market it as a new handset, maintain the current price and margins, and support a higher price point for the 4.7" model.

Explain what Apple will offer at the $99 price tier that matches industry expectations for the $99 price tier.
The 5c will remain, but will receive a spec bump of some kind. A7, M7, Camera, all from the 5s. Touch ID? Anyone's guess. I say yes, but it doesn't necessarily have to be so. It will NOT get NFC, and therefor not feature one of the main draws of the iPhone 6.
Nothing about that will take away from the iPhone 6.
That's the problem with making these things so thin. Something's gotta give, as the song says.
A camera module could be made with a right angle mirror, allowing a thinner module, but the expense and precision would likely be too much to expect.
I don't see why Apple couldn't just put a thicker battery in there for more battery life while making the camera flush with the body. The current generation of phones are already thin enough, we didn't need something even thinner and more fragile.

Totally agree. The protrusion means it will not lay flat on a table and rock back and forth as you press different areas of the screen. That seems like such an astonishingly absurd failure. I'm hoping that the lens only comes out when the camera is turned on and then goes back in flush when not used. If it has optical zoom capability then that would be an astonishing accomplishment. We can only hope.

1) I can't recall ever using my iPhone on a flat surface. I seem to always pick it up when I use it.

It's intended to be, and no doubt designed as, a handheld device as opposed to, say, the iPad which is both handheld and placed on surfaces given it's larger screen size allows more distance from the display to remain functional.
Having such a moving part would add a lot of mechanical trouble and a failure point for sure.
Plan "B" I expect would be a case that evened out the back...

2) Do you use a case? How common are cases?
Good points. Maybe I'm overreacting about the failure aspect.
Most other brands (samsung, htc etc) seem to have gotten away with protruding cameras.
I personally have avoided using a case, accepting the nicks and scratches that have accumulated on the edges. With a protruding camera and a not-so-sexy back side, I and many others would probably resign to putting a case on.
The larger camera and better battery life will be a big plus to the updated iPhone 6 and frankly its going to need it. I plug my phone in every night AND my mophie case which is usually keeping the phone alive throughout the day. I have a feeling an upgrade will soon be happening for myself. Don't forget when you are ready to purchase the new iPhone to get some cash trading in your old one at http://www.farewellcell.com.

Silly-billy, NO ONE uses their phone as a phone to make phone calls like a phone would do anymore¡
I dont get all the criticisms about its design, I think it's sleek, minimalistic, and distinctly Apple. I miss the 5's black though

Who uses an iPhone to make phone calls?
Who holds a 4" iPhone to their ear?
I stuck a samsung s5 in my pants.
Joan Rivers could, too. Now, call your doctor for some penicillin.

Why does that make any sense? It’s not the 5C then. Either the 5C and 5S remain or the 5S turns into a 5SC.

With either the earphones or a BT earpiece there's no need to hold the device up to your head.
That's possible now with the 5s/5c.
The AIR would make a pretty awesome FaceTime machine, the Mini not much worse.
