Preorder? No way. This is one of those times I have to have the device in my hand at the store ..
Yeah, it seems legit that you want to have your new iPhone 6 in your hands as soon as possible.
I really liked the Apple event today but I was missing (as mentioned earlier) a statement to the RAM. Additionally I thought there would be also an update of the iPads. Maybe Apple will miss to update those devices this year? What do you think?!
Maybe they want to sell more of the iPhone 6 Plus and because of the 5.5" Screen they think it wouldn't be necessary to update the iPads?!
Since I want the 5.5" I couldn't disagree more. And what will be the point of waiting?
Because they've painted themselves into a corner design wise. How much can they change the next one? They went bigger, and thinner twice with this one.
I noticed on Apple's webpage for iPhone they don't talk about much. With the 5s they had a separate page for design and one for features. I'm not completely sold that Apple wanted to make bigger phones, regardless of what Phil says. And I didn't hear much about breakthrough display technology that would indicate it wasn't possible to release a larger phone before this year. My guess is Apple is doing this because they had to, not because they wanted to.
Something about this phone seems very off. And my guess is Jony Ive was heavily involved in the watch project and that was eating up most of his time. And I also think because the 5/5s was complex from a manufacturing standpoint the 6 was all about being easier to manufacture. Not sure if I'll get one when my contract is up in January. Maybe wait for the 6s when the phone has sapphire glass display and the 4.7" model gets OIS. And maybe by the time Apple figures out how to make the antenna lines less visible.
"Something about [my perception of] this phone seems very off."
My guess is that you are very anxious to conclude that Tim Cook was prevaricating about waiting for the technology to be ready to do big screens the Apple way, as well as being anxious to show that those who agreed with him (like me) were just making excuses for him .
You got parts of the answer today, but it's way too complex to approach simplistically. First, no info on whether the backplane for the display is IGZO or LTPS. AFIK, they don't talk about this detail lately, or ever, because of course they don't control the R&D for production on these processes. They do talk about stuff they develop (probably) like in-plane switching (IPS) or glass-to-film bonding.
Today we got dual-domain pixels. Do you know what those are? I didn't think so, neither do I—yet. But they're developed (by Apple bankroll?) to allow more than one person to look at the screen at once without pixel bleaching. Bigger screen demands better multiperson experience. Very Apple, that detail.
We also got 183% more pixels to drive on the Plus, yet 14 hours of video watching, without overheating the processor. How? The answer is a very crucial part of the case against your Apple-as-slacker cryptonarrative. Who makes the displays? Crucial, because if they're LTPS, they may be an entirely new production line, since they're doing the dual-domain thing, plus UV light alignment, and the there's something about deeper blacks too. And let's not forget the doubling of transistors on this processor.
In short, you got a lot of 'splainin' to do before you accuse Jony Ive of being distracted, and causing naifs like BenjaminFrost to go with you down your slippery path.
I saw no iPhone 6 dock on the store, so I asked an associate. She didn’t know about the existence of one. I guess the cutoff date for expecting one is the 19th.
There’d better be one.
Let me guess: suburb of Naptown? I always pictured you in Madison County somewhere.

I won’t be burning any bridges with Apple if they don’t make one, but I’ll be extremely disappointed.
There’s no reason for them to NOT make one for the 6, particularly after not making one for the 5 and then making a point of rectifying that mistake by making one for the 5S (that works with the 5) AND the 5C.

This will certainly be an iPhone I will need to test out in the Apple Store before deciding which one.

So after looking at the photos and videos available online, I'm still so polarized by the design:
- The front is gorgeous in all colors. The larger screens, the 2.5D glass, the proportions (especially the 4.7") it just looks money.
- The sides I'm ambivalent on as I really liked the slab sides of the 4 to 5S, but it's mostly different - not better or worse. The sunken buttons are a nice touch.
- I still can't even get ambivalent on the back. What exactly are those thick lines - aluminum accents? A different material? The protruding camera doesn't bother me much (though flush would have been sleeker), but that back design (even in hands-on videos) just leaves me cold.

Those thick lines are insulators to isolate the antennas. They have to be there and they have to be that thick. They aren't arbitrary or chosen as design features.
We'll be learning more about their function soon, I expect. But one thing we know now is that Apple doesn't do things like those inlays for frivolous reasons. They may adjust one to be symmetrical with the other, but that's it.

I couldn't agree more. IMO the 5.5" could've waited for the next refresh.

Of course, but not today.
Foxconn. Samsung is but a part supplier.
China, Japan, and who knows, maybe Korea. Plus me and numerous other screen fetishists/photo lovers.
Why? Aren't you on the phablet bandwagon?
But personally I plan to keep my 5S until it breaks instead of upgrading like I normally would after 2 years, since I don't want these larger screens.

And token based
I don't know what that means. Would you mind explaining?
Holy shit! Free music!!
No, just a U2 album. No music.
I hate that i'm gonna feel like and AM going to get a lesser version of the iphone by buying the 6.
How hard could it have been to but at least 1080p screen on the 6!? Same can be said for the image stabilization tech too.
Or is it that Apple are happy to sacrifice better specs to make it 0.2mm thinner than the plus?
disappointed.

Their stock app is going to counter that:
