Socialism impoverishes a nation in the pursuit of elevating a few. Capitalism elevates a nation by creating opportunity, which Is the tool for individuals to lift themselves out of poverty.

I'm delighted that sensible Scots have rejected Independence.

More fool them! They have once again bowed down to their English masters and lords. It is gratifying to see that they know their place.

Taking my patriotic hat off, it's good that the United Kingdom will endure for the foreseeable future. In particular, the defeat of Alex Salmond is excellent; the man is a charlatan and not worthy of the good Scots.

I'm upset by this. I invested heavily in construction companies all set to rebuild Hadrian's Wall.

Hmmm… You mean socialism as embodied by the defunct Soviet system. That was not socialism. Just a veneer. Totalitarianism disguised.

I know Alex Salmond has some skeletons in the closet. But he certainly has more charism than his deputy.

Now, it maybe a good opportunity for the Scots. If Westminster does not give them the devolution they are expecting, there will be another votation, and this time the 'yes' will lose; if Westminster does, then they will be able to seize the opportunity to show to the world that an autonomous Scotland works, so that an independent one will, too. So it's a win-win scenario for the future.

Socialism in France is causing those with money to flee. Who will be left to squeeze? That's right, the middle-class and lower income. Socialism is a farce.

Hum. ‘Socialism’ in France is center-right. It's on the same level as your democrats.

Besides, I am not sure the Bangladeshi 8-year old children who cut, darn, stitch and sew from 7 am to 8 pm for a paltry dollar per day would share your appreciation of capitalism.

    That sounds wrong.

That is in no way an argument.

Well, you should come here and have a gander. But frankly, that's not a place to argue too much about this neither. :) And it would serve little purpose anyway.

I was mistaken about Salmond. He will step down in November, that's a plucky move. Not many politicians resign after being disavowed in an election, especially since his mandate as first minister wasn't at stake. Kudos to him.

But what if I come during one of your 80 vacation days and miss it all? :p

Now now, it's actually 35 days IIRC. The further south you go, the more holidays you get (Spain 40). All due to the temperature...

Actually, teachers get two full Summer months + 15 days at the beginning of November + 15 days for Xmas + 15 days around February + 15 days around April + some holidays in May. That's more than 4 months of vacation each year…

Would you happen to know off hand what time of the day your schools generally start and end?

I can (I have two kids, so I am pretty much aware of the schedule :D): morning from 8:30 to 11:30 and afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 Monday/Thursday; Tuesday/Friday ends at 3pm ; Wednesday morning only. That's for elementary school (ages 3-10). From secondary school on (ages 10-14), count one extra hour circa per day. At the 'lycée' (ages 15-18) some work Wednesday all day or Saturday morning, mileage may vary.

I’ve pretty much no clue if this is ironic or no. I don’t know a single fact about US Elementary school system, except there is no (free) school under 6 years, as far as I understand.

You don't know any facts as this is untrue. Kindergarden starts age 5 and many districts provide preschool for age 4
