BT 4.0 is as simple as a USB stick for older desktop computers.  While Apple PR would like you to think otherwise, the rest of the world has been using BT 4.0 for as long as iPhones.

There's also the Wi-Fi Direct standard created by Intel for enabling cross-platform instant sharing.  It's the same procedure as what Apple does but not dependent on anything except a reasonably modern WiFi chipset.  Android, Blackberry, Xbox One, and other systems support it.  BT 3.0 and BT 4.0 also have a standard for handing off file transfers to WiFi.  Apple could have supported those or contributed to the standards if they thought they needed more.  Instead, Apple went for a proprietary solution that limits connectivity.

Why laugh at BT file sharing?  Almost every device on Earth except iPhones have built-in support and 2 Mbps is plenty for instantly sharing a map or photo.  As I mentioned above, modern BT has hand-off to WiFi for file transfer.

Yes, Apple is in the business of selling hardware but there are a LOT of markets they don't want.  They don't want inexpensive phones, netbooks, servers, big-data, business appliances, or networked appliances.  To not be compatible with those systems is suicide, Microsoft-style.

No, the iPhone predates Bluetooth 4 by a considerable amount of time.

And literally no one at Apple cares, nor should they.

Yeah, they’re really bleeding chips by not supporting garbage¡

And what the **** is the advantage of BT sharing, lets say over a data or wifi connection, with which there are a billion sharing options? Absolutely nothing, but you have to find SOMETHING to bitch over, don't you, even if your solution requires BT USB sticks- sounds reasonable! I hear iPhones don't even have SD cards, or removable batteries! One of these days consumers are going to suddenly realize this and simultaneously chuck all their iDevices into the ocean. Oh, and netbooks! Glad you brought those up, haven't heard of them in years.

And yeah, you're absolutely right. Apple has been on a suicide spiral since it's inception. It's demise will happen any day now, as people like you have been predicting for years/decades. Any day. Maybe tomorrow, even. Maybe you can even hold your breath. Your childish, petulent "APPLE IS DOOMED BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT DOING WHAT *I* WANT THEM TO DO" fantasy is just around the corner, damn the actual facts.

Those of you with Yosemite -- can I sync some documents from my Mac with my iPhone and have it occur in background on a schedule?

Slurpy,  thanks for the love!!  NO I don't want to go anywhere near the cloud.  I am talking about Mac to iPhone only.  I wouldn't trust a picture of my toe nail, or a letter to Father Christmas in the cloud.  And sorry, excuse the ignorance.

I almost spit out some coffee laughing while reading this.

Just let that image sink in:  Sleek iPhone 6,.....with a big honkin' 3.5" drive glued on.

I remember the first digital camera I ever used (borrowed).  It had a 3.5" floppy drive for storage, and I thought it was AWESOME because it had "unlimited storage".  I think I used it to take pix of my new 2001 vehicle, so that was the time-frame.

5-to-10 seconds between taking each little 640x480 JPG, and so happy to have them!

It felt like "digital Christmas" snapping away with that thing!

We've come so far since then.

Slurply thanks for the great laugh.    (The other equally-good analogy is any joke to do with parallel ports.... )

    Cheers!

Oh no we have the juvenile smart arses on the forum today.  They are Oh so clever and Oh so funny.. ho.ho ho.  Well why don't you all bugger off for a while, go back to you own "look at me" and "I am so clever" little boxes  and let the grown-ups answer the question.

Is there a simple way native to Yosemite and iOS8 to sync documents, any documents, direct between a Mac and the iPhone not through the cloud .  And no I don't want to use some third party app like USB Disk etc.

As for cameras arsehole, my first camera was a Linhof 4x5 bellows camera that I carried on my arm which also had unlimited 'storage' - a box of 4"x5"  two way backs that would each produce two, yes two negatives !!

Hell I'm running the latest public beta and its running great. There's always bugs here and there but I think its ready for prime time. Its nothing 10.10.1 can't fix. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see any more public releases before the final.

Just curious, what is your fear of the cloud?

"I was insinuating that this was a step in the right direction (though I doubt they made it just today). Apple's releases have been getting slowly buggier across the board for the last few years, it's not just iOS."

Opinion. Data suggests otherwise. I manage 50 machines. Not a single kernel panic since 10.8, I have not had to force-quit a machine (except mine with out-there apps and beta OS) since 10.9. Earlier OSs were far more problematic. Could not get rid of my iSight G5 iMacs and 10.5 fast enough.

I still get kernel panics in 10.9.

Even though you don't deserve an answer, because of the way you're insulting everyone and calling people assholes, the answer is "No", there is not, apart from Airdrop, nor should there be, because the concept of wireless syncing with no cloud makes very little sense, and has a shitload of disadvantages. Apple doesnt need to waste its resources catering software solutions for paranoid nutjobs like you.

    Hey Slurpy,

Thanks for the answer. Really appreciate that.  I was asking the question for someone who wanted to use their new 128GB iPone 6 as a backup device for all their documents that could be accessed directly off the iPhone for viewing. The person does not want to sync to the cloud because some of their documents are commercial-in-confidence and would breach their contractual obligations to have the docs outside of their direct control.  I had thought AirDrop would work but there is no suggestion off an auto sync feature.

As for insults, I was after a simple answer on the forum to something of which I was not sure with Yosemite rather than some clever put down.  If I insulted anyone I apologise sincerely and I think it was only to yourself and 'aelegg' in response to what others might call forum bullying.  Some of us may not have the experience with Yosemite that you may have had.

     Anyway, keep morale high.
