I think this is a great idea. I, too, also keep my desktop clear with just a couple icons in the far upper right column because I want to SEE the wallpaper I have on my computer screen (a picture of my wife and one of our dogs). To be able to do so with the phone or pad is great because I don't see a bunch of cluttered icons and their badges immediately in my face when I first "turn on/log on" the phone. One swipe and the immediate icons/apps I need are right there. I think this is a very nice little feature to add to iOS 8.
Isn't your other dog jealous that it isn't pictured too? J/k
When’s the last time we got a new screensaver in OS X? When’s the last time anyone, anywhere, for any reason, at any time USED a screensaver?
Do people REALLY still have plasma TVs and CRT monitors hooked to their computers?
Another one of your silly rants? Anyone in a work environment uses the screensaver with password lock, so when they leave their desk they can invoke the screensaver to prevent unauthorized access by another employee. The screensaver would also indicate to others that the employee is still at the office. A message could be used on the screen to indicate when they return. The name has never changed because the term "screensaver" has been known for decades.
I've been doing this since iOS 6. And yes I have. Additionally, if you don't want any pages on your phone, dump all the icons into 4 folders that make sense to you, and move them to the launchpad. Easy peasy.

i do have a plasma hooked up to a mini, but thats besides the point -- i enjoy the screensaver on my 27" mac in the study. its more pleasing to me than the desktop.
Cute option, especially for personalized home screen art I can see that as being a fun choice to have available. My own lock screen is a shot of a bricked up, iron barred window. (shot from a section of the NYC High Line)... A whimsical bit of "extra" security.
OTOH "Screensaver"? Just a more aesthetic choice for securing my work machine when I'm away from it. "Sleep" has the black screen, "screensaver" and there's an appealing (perhaps) graphic instead.
People who want to use a photo as their wallpaper? I keep my computer desktops almost empty as well, just my style. That being said, with iDevices I almost always leave the home screen set to default.
Right, but the lock screen has a place for a photo. Why would you want to unlock your device to get to a screen that doesn't let you do anything (except access the 4 apps at the bottom)? I don't know about you, but I like my "home" to be a place where I can work, not be one step away from where I can work.

lilgto64, that a great idea.
paxman, how about if swiping left of the home screen got the "dashboard" screen just like on OS X?
Mailbox is a third party app.
Mailbox by Dropbox

That's the mailbox app icon. A third party email client, if I'm not mistaken.
This doesn't work on my 4s. I just get a glitched home screen like this:
Edit: it's not showing the picture I added to the post. It basically shows the two first rows of apps half way thru the screen.
Answers:
1.) Mavericks
2.) Yesterday for me ; rIght now for others. Any Apple Store computer uses them right now.
3.) Yes but an iMac will suffice.
Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?
The mailbox icon is different. Hmm.

Wait, what version of iOS8 is this???
I have iOS8.02 but still have the old "mail" icon, this is showing a new icon and "mailbox"
It is a third-party app called Mailbox.

I prefer to be able to have my Icons where ever I want them. Not auto-arranged. That would be nice.
I put my icons wherever I want.

Terrible idea. People know where their apps are and would throw a fit if they moved around for absolutely no reason.
I don’t see your point.
Learn how CRTs work. Then learn how LCDs work.
It’s not 1999 anymore.
But you’re not at your desk, so why would it matter?
I don’t care about the name. I care about the use at all.

Um, guys? I did exactly this in iOS 7. Without iTunes, I should add. Nothing has changed.
