There is disagreement about whether the TILB will have a "Start" menu but it will run MS Office.

    Don't forget the kickstand.

Yet another revenue generator for Microsoft.

    Not.

They really need to get out of consumer hardware, they're not good at it because it's not in their DNA.

I think their DNA was irreparably damaged by Ballmer.

Sure, I was waiting for my Porsche to be delivered when Toyota brought out a new Corolla a week ahead of delivery.  Was I gonna wait? No way. Sorry Porsche. Got me a new Corolla!

How do you know what Microsoft's attempt is?    Those images above are concepts that DID NOT COME from Microsoft.   They're someone's guess.

The fact is that anyone who is commenting on the quality of Microsoft's offering is trolling.   You have no idea whether Microsoft's attempt will be good, bad or indifferent.

Microsoft's watch may indeed wind up being another piece of crap that no one wants, but the fact remains that we simply don't know.

Steve told us that Microsoft "lacked taste." They've done nothing to prove him wrong, only drove the fact home, So we do know what to expect... we just don't know how bad it will be.

According to the Verge it's more of a fitness band with various sensors that also works with iOS and Android. So I don't see it as an ?Watch competitor.

I believe the MS brand is the problem here. We have very little details about an MS watch but because it's from MS (and forgetting that this is an Apple centric board) our expectations is that it will suck, and suck well.

The day Microsoft releases a product that doesn't suck will be the day that they release a vacuum cleaner...

"... Microsoft previously attempted to market a smartwatch as part of the now defunct Smart Personal Object Technology (SPOT) platform that died in 2008..."

I also remember the Timex-Microsoft DataLink in the nineties. It used optical bands from the CRT monitor to transfer PIM data to the watch wirelessly. It died a premature death.

I vividly recall when MS launched Surface, with high-cost special kiosks in prime spots in malls - with everyone walking by, completely ignoring them. They then tried opening Microsoft stores in malls, as close as possible to Apple Stores - only to be embarrassed by the start contrast in potential customer interest.

Their CEO apparently wants all products to now have "Windows" in their name...which causes everyone's brain to block out this vestige of corporate cluelessness from the last century. Maybe they'll abbreviate the name to WindWatch.

Excellent point. Let me rephrase that to include doing HW and SW really well. Not that you said it, but do you think it's healthier for MS and Google to use the approaches they have? It seems that only Samsung has had success in the Android world.

Making HW, and SW really well is much easier said than done. While using Android isn't ideal it has allowed the other manufacturers to survive, that gives them the potential to turn things around, and take the mantle from Samsung, but we'll never see another Palm device.

Unless I can see MS take some more market share in mobile world than the pathetic number they have now, I don't see their smart watches even see a sunlight.

Apparently Microsoft's new Windows OS, Windows 9 (which became Windows 10 for no good reason (of course there is a reason and it takes no Einstein to figure it out)) was codenamed Windows Threshold... They are actually about 5-6 years past it, and they can't be that clueless to not know that.

I really don't get the smart watch. I had a TI digital watch in the 80s that cost $10. It would tell you the time and the date by the press of a button. It was not a one handed operation though. I've had several other watches over the years, but I quit wearing them quite a while ago except for special occasions. The way I see it, watches serve only two basic purposes: As a fashion statement and to keep time, neither of which really interests me.

Paying with your watch and checking your heart rate are new but I only use credit cards to pay once or maybe twice a day and I check my heart rate much less frequently than that with just a finger on the pulse. I don't think any of the current crop of announced or released smart watches are quite on par with fine Swiss watches in terms of jewelry. I just don't see them as very useful and they are too geeky nerd style in my opinion.

Do they still make Cracker Jacks in America?... with the little toy surprise?... how 'bout cereal, does it also have little surprises or figurines in it?

Just a thought who MS could partner with... that's all.

    * If it's a fitness band like @Rogifan said, then maybe Trader Joe's Trail Mix might work better.

Note: I remember getting a Dick Tracy watch in Cracker Jacks once... a long LONG time ago.

Oh come on, we, AI members, can't laugh at Microsoft without you calling us trolls? If we were mocking on a Microsoft fan blog site I'd agree, but here ... really? This is sport :D

Oh the memories ... now you have me pining for my plastic submarine that when you put baking soda in, it went up and down in the bath ... Free with Frosted Flakes in the late 50's I seem to recall. Probably more original and better made than the MS Watch ... but your idea is a good one.
