Free without contract probably still wouldn't be enough to move these paperweights

Free with Amazon Prime and I'm in.

Would still need some type agreement with a carrier.

Yep - that's the whole problem:  charging for it...

They phones are basically free now right, but still no one is buying them. So how can it be about price at this point?

Who wants a phone with a primary purpose of displaying ads for Amazon?

It was a bad idea from the start.

"We didn't get the price right," Limp said.
That's not the only thing that wasn't right.
People in general accept that a cheaper product usually also means less facilities/lower quality.
A new phone to be put on the market has to be VERY good in order to compete with the iPHONE, and the likes.
I think most people will rather buy a second hand iPHONE that will do what they want, with the reputation it has, and also - very importantly - with the associated street credit.

As they say in real estate: too many Days On Market. Amazon, you blew your opportunity for rollout momentum adoption. This is what strategic business planning is about.
And more attractive pricing will advance sales only people want to buy your device - which has not been the case.

1 year free of Amazon Prime and 2 years for the phone contract ... after your Amazon Prime expires, you still have to pay your phone contract, and then pay for another year of Prime if you want to keep watching, listening, buying, and consuming.
