you know what really got me upset ? I'm living in Austria and my phone company recently increased the price of my unlimited minutes, sms and data plan by 37% to EUR 18,- per month --so I decided to switch to T-Mobile....they had an LTE offer (30 Mbit/s) with a limit of 10GB /month for EUR 16,- ....I signed up for it..now I'm quite upset that I switched because I used up the allotment in 2 weeks......
As soon as I read this I went straight to my Verizon account and switched from 6GB to 10GB for the same price per month and I get an extra 4 GB of data plus 2 GB promotional data they were running if you get your iPhone before 9/30 so basically got an extra 6GB of data for free.
FWIW, I visited the AT&T store to investigate. They won't offer this 3GB/$40 plan on a shared account. Theoretically, I could get rid of the shared account in favor of separate accounts (2 phone household) but since they have no iPhone 6's in stock, it was moot at this point (since that was the whole idea.) The trade-in program for the iPhone 5s ended.
A lot of this promotional stuff is just that: promotional. I'm reasonably happy with AT&T, but they do make this stuff a moving target, and never make it simple - the idea being to make it impossible to compare and shop good deals. It actually is quite effective.
Gonna wait a while for stock to improve, then see what is available.

I received an email from Verizon two weeks ago telling me I'd now have 32GB shared data for the same price as the 16 I was overpaying for already. I'm not under contract so it still won't keep me from dumping them. Finding out quite recently that Verizon (and ATT) have surreptitiously inserted tracking code in every search you do to benefit advertisers with absolutely no idea it was going on doesn't help their case. https://www.expressvpn.com/blog/verizons-perma-cookie-threatens-privacy/ http://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/29/att-verizon-tracking-techniques/
They will do this until one day they remove all cheaper plans. They may give you a lot of data but you must start with a higher plan like $40/3GB. At the end of the day, they want to make sure that you won't pay below $100 for a family of 2: 2 phones = $40 voice + $40 data + $25 (for second phone) = $105. Yup!
Let me know if any of you get cheaper monthly cost on your phone service ever so far even with all perks and promotions thrown in by providers.
YES I DID!!!!
In the spring, ATT had a promotion and grandfathered people into a family sharing plan. I went from 5 phones at $330/month down to $215/month. The bonus was that it was when they were breaking up the payments so you paid separately for the subsidy. I no longer was paying subsidies on 4 phones that had been upgraded the previous fall and the other iPhone 5 from the Christmas before. Not sure why they did it, but I accepted it when it was offered and saved $115/month off my bill.

Nope. If you're a Verizon customer, you can just log on to the "My Verizon" web site (or call customer service at *611) and change your data plan.
FWIW, Verizon lets you change the size of your data plan all you want without affecting your contract. You can increase it or decrease it as your usage dictates. As long as you don't actually disconnect any of the lines, there are no "early termination" fees or other surcharges.
I recently re-upped my VZW contract when the iPhone 6 came out. I then bumped my data from 6GB (at $80/mo) to 8GB (for $90/mo) two weeks later, due to increased usage that month, since doing so is cheaper than the overage charge of $10/GB. And today, I logged on and changed it again to 10GB for $80/mo.

That hasn't been my experience with VZW. The promotional period is the time during which you can sign up. Typically, when the promo expires, it will simply mean that that pricing tier won't exist when you want to change your data plan, but you'll keep your rate until then.
And, of course, there will likely be different rate tiers at that time. None of which will typically affect you until you decide to make a change.

I don't know about AT&T, but my experience with VZW is that these dates are a function of when you activated your handset, not when you last changed your plan. It's not like FiOS, where you have to re-up for another 2 years whenever a new promotion becomes available.

Yes, but it's cheaper. It's a $40/mo fee for a smartphone on a 2-year contract, but that fee drops to $15 or $25 (depending on the size of your data plan) if your phone is not on a contract (purchased outright, contract expired, or paid on an installment plan.)

They did it because of competition. By offering you a better plan, they hope to keep you from switching to Verizon or T-Mobile or Sprint - all of whom were offering strong incentives (e.g. low rates and paying your early-termination fee) to switch. Which is why AT&T and VZW are both offering such attractive deals now.

Worse Verizon and ATT really do sell "your" data unlike Google who they would prefer you blame all your troubles on.
