My router still only supports 802.11g, so that's irrelevant to me right now.
Yes, but one can plan ahead. Someday you will get an 802.11ac router and on that day, an 802.11ac-compliant Apple TV unit would work even better.
In summer 2013, I bought the newest 802.11ac-compliant AirPort Extreme despite the fact that I had one device that could connect on it using that WiFi protocol. Today? Just that same device. But someday, there will be more, it's simply a matter of time.
I tend to keep routers for a very long time anyhow, keep computers for a long time (5+ years), and phones/tablets for 2-3 years.
