    Lol, AI is trolling again.

This really looks to be Apple partner Foxconn's work, more than Nokia's.

Now we know more about that strategy. The industrial design for the N1 came from Nokia, but the company is no longer in the manufacturing business and has licensed that design — along with its Z Launcher and various intellectual property — to Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, which rather interestingly will handle distribution and sales and customer care, and will even be responsible for liabilities and warranty costs.

Foxconn is of course best (though not exclusively) known as a key behind-the-scenes Apple manufacturing partner, so this is quite a step towards the spotlight for the firm (more properly known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.) Indeed, Foxconn also recently bought mobile spectrum in Taiwan, so it seems it is rapidly evolving its strategy.

If it weren't for the name Nokia, this tablet would otherwise have Foxconn on it.  If Nokia were behind this, they wouldn't need to license anything.

Nice design. Wonder where they got it from :)

Is it running "Open source Android" (what google calls AOSP), what Fandroids euphemistically call "stock Android" (i.e., with closed source Google apps), or some custom fork?
I'd guess it's Nokia custom Android-based OS they had developed just before the MS buyout became final. I think they'd also released a phone with that OS.They were calling it Nokia X when they first revealed it.

...and no, AOSP is not called stock Android anywhere that I've seen. Stock android would refer to the pure unadulterated Google Android build, Google services included, before the licensees add their own flavored features and skins. AOSP is simply open-source Android code which anyone can freely use, even to create their own customized commercial OS like Amazon and Nokia have done.

Wow. That's even worse than the SS tablets that Apple sued over, isn't it?

I do have SOME sympathy, there's only so much design you can do with a tablet. This, however, is a little much. Make it green or something, how about a chin with no forehead? Why not a triangle?

Maybe it'll fit into the iPad mini cases already available.

I already posted Nokia's splash page for it earlier in the thread confirming it is a custom skin(Z launcher)

Shouldn't the headline be..."Microsoft making Android tablets."

He didn't say they called it stock Android. You missed the comma.

No because this is not the acquired Nokia division that Microsoft bought.

I remembered reading yesterday about Nokia selling branding. A modern day Polaroid is the way I saw it compared. If Foxconn already licensed the Nokia name for this product then the report was pretty late in coming. Assuming Foxconn is actually the producer and seller it begs a few questions.

We know Foxconn builds for Apple, but Foxconn also does design in addition to builds. Do they do any part of Apple's casings design and if so do they retain any rights to any of it? IIRC Foxconn sells completed units to Apple, not simply billing them for assembly with Apple providing all the parts, but I could be wrong.

I didn't miss the comma but connected that part with the first statement. In re-reading it I think I'd agree with you that SN did not intend to associate stock Android with AOSP. tho it's not entirely clear.

    They lured designers from Samsung?

No, looks like the designers were kidnapped from Xiaomi...

I'm wondering what Apple will do about this. Part of the cross-licensing deal between Apple and Microsoft was an anti-cloning agreement. That certainly looks pretty close to a clone on the hardware side anyway...

This sh** should be illegal. I wish all Apple copycats were punished for their slander and leeching off of Apple.

Had you read the comments you wouldn't have written that comment.

In shock at how it's so easily possible to get away with flat out STEALING these days.

    What a rip!

No need to get too angry on Nokia. It looks very much like iPad, but with a nice little touch of their own. Elegant and stylish. Well done.

I think though that it will not be a big hit. I expect it to be as laggy as other android devices, despite nice specs. For some reason it is hard for android makers to get tablets right. Happy with my Air 2, though battery life not what I expected...

Why can't the rest of the tech companies create something original? This is not a "convergence of design". It's laziness.

For Heaven's sake, how is it that AppleInsider readers know more about this story than Appleinsider journos? Did you check your facts with a second source? No. Do you ever? No. This must be about the least impressive story on the web today. By miles...
