Well 'Aids' would be fine. It's AIDS that I suspect you were thinking of.

From your keyboard to Tim's ear - don't be scummy, Apple.

    Might be a buy?

I don't invest in things that annoy me, and advertising companies annoy me greatly.

One is far more invasive than the other.

Rubicon says "We look forward to providing buyers with access to the unprecedented audience targeting capabilities iAd brings to automated advertising." That's a lot more than showing car part ads in a car-related app.

There's a band name in there somewhere.

    “Sister and the ED Drugs”

    First album: Gently Clubbing You

    Hit single: Disney Diapers

Stylized like Josie & the Pussycats, but she’s just dressed normally and the rest of her band wears giant Viagra and Cialis costumes.

I thought Google was considered a 'scummy company" BECAUSE they delivered targeted ads for their customers the advertisers? :\ You know, the ol "you're the product" meme?

No, Google is considered scummy because it report your interest and as much about you as possible to vendors who can then drive you nuts. That's hardly the same thing as allowing someone to be shown ads of stuff they want to see. I would cite Amazon's store as an excellent example of doing it right. They show me once in a while (and not too often) stuff I really am interested in and related items. I actually enjoy getting them. Amazon do not, as far as I can tell, pass this personalized profile of my tastes to anyone else though, I have never once received an email or phone call related to any of those products from anyone other than Amazon themselves. Both Amazon and Apple sell me things, Google doesn't sell me anything, they just sell me.

Wow, that's good, thanks for the inspiration ... I might change my foot note 'meme' to "Google doesn't sell you anything, they just sell you!" :D

That's not what they do. When you visit a site, Google decides which ads are most likely to generate clicks and sales from you. This is based on what Google knows about you, but the vendor doesn't receive any information about you unless you opt in to share it through Google. This is why you can go buy something at Amazon, then see ads for that item for the next 5 days. Why would Amazon pay to advertise something that you already purchased if they had any information on who was seeing their ads? This is actually a horrible financial inefficiency, and I'm surprised that Google gets away with it.

I think you misread what i wrote. I am referring to Amazon sending me a page that says.. 'Items you maybe interested in based upon what 'YOU' looked at or bought recently'. I would say that means Amazon are talking directly to me about what I view. I was not talking about Amazon's ads. I was saying I liked the way they dealt with my personal viewing information.

Exactly. I am not suggesting Google knows my name when I am unfortunate enough to see an ad from them, (I use Adblock so i see few luckily for me) but they can assist others in targeting me if I let them based upon what I view (except I have Little Snitch that blocks this). This, I and many others don't want to happen.

Please link me to the opt out page on Google that lets me stop this from happening (kind of like the Do Not Call List, my phone is on), oh, wait there probably isn't one, right?

I'd like to suggest Congress write a law, like the DO Not Call' law, that anyone should be able to go to a web site and click to add their IP / MAC address / email, to the 'do not send unsolicited ads to' list. The DO NOT EMAIL LIST.

In fact this could even have a sub set where you allow certain topics you want to get mail on, such as Apple, Canon, Russian Single Women ... ;)

If you'd try a better search engine like Google Search you could probably find this stuff without my help. :D

Yep, I must have misread. It looked like you were saying that G sends sensitive personal user information to its customers without opt-in permission.

Amazon's approach is convenient. It makes Christmas shopping risky though, in case someone in my family hops on our machine to shop Amazon and sees all of the stuff I've been researching...

YES I agree! Amazon need a new front end for the same Prime account, just different log in windows to that same account with their own passwords. ...like Netflix's "Who is watching' type thing.

As well as family members seeing potential gifts, my wife searches for stuff and next thing I know is amongst cameras and computer stuff I am sent info about ... suddenly there are Women's SHOES!!! aaaggghhh.

It was widely reported yesterday. You should give Yahoo a spin then. Perhaps their search engine will perform a bit better for you.

I use all search engines, I am well protected from Google and Flash type snooping, I have digital condoms with Little Snitch and AdBlock ;) ... I tend to read sites I like, not search that much unless specifically researching something, hence only just seeing the Firefox escape story.

That's kind of a "good luck with that" news item.
