Yeah, sell them at a loss. Now that's a good marketing move. More people will opt for the middle model. That's the way it is. The Superdrive model will sell for the same price as an equivalent Dell now. I read that the Dell (with a bigger hard drive) was about $2000.

I can't believe Apple was sellling them at a loss. They always have good profit margins on they're hardware.

I'm with EmAn. I'm sure it was a lower margin, but I really doubt they were selling at a loss.

I'm not sure where it says that the price went up but I guess I will find out soon enough. Here's the bottom line. Apple really, really should have come out with a 17 inch CRT iMac 2 years ago. When the old iMac was competitive on specs it sold between 450,000 and 700,000 units a quarter. But it became outdated about two years ago and sales went down to around 300,000. Apple simply missed out on customers because they had no machine to appeal to the majority of computer buyers, who are NOT going to pay $1699 for a desktop.

Whether it would have been big or awkward looking or wouldn't have won design awards, a 17 inch CRT iMac would have hit the sweet spot of the market and sold very well. Now it could be a year before LCD prices bring the new iMac into a normal consumer range. Apple missed the boat on the 17 inch iMac. Sure the Cube was awesome and the new iMac is too, but they are not priced for most of the market, which wants to pay at most $1000 or $1100 for a full setup.

And also, I'm sure there are people who won't spend the extra money. Stupid move by Stever.

Well, I am unhappy, but I think that I will just wait until prices come back down.. I have no idea what this could do to sales, though..

Well obviously they were not making a profit or else they wouldn't raise the price. LCD prices have been increasing monthly since the beginning of the year. It has been widely published and mentioned in plenty of articles. It's not Apple's fault. But they need to make a profit. Losing 10% or even 25% sales because of the price increase is better then not making a profit on the remaining sales. Give them a break. they didn't want to do this, of course. But holding shares in a company that doesn't make profits is not a good thing. Next year, capacity will increase for screen manufacture and prices may come down a bit.

UPDATE. Apple store open. Prices increased $100 on each model, not up to $200 as previously thought!

OK, MacsRGood4U, you really think they were selling them at a loss? Come on, that's ridiculous. They probably just weren't making the profits that Steve wants.

Let's just hope that all of the resellers who have iMacs on order get them at the original price.

EDIT - had some wrong info... I see it's $100 US across the board.

What's funny about this is I remember having the LCD iMac debates almost a year ago, and even back then everyone knew that LCD prices were expected to go up. So most of us didn't think Apple could do a reasonably-priced LCD iMac. I guess we were right, and Steve was wrong.

Of course Apple was making some profit, but since they are now paying more for the LCD screens and memory what do you expect them to do, reduce profit margins even lower? In the scheme of things $100 isn't all that big. Now for some good news:

Apple in Volume Production of New iMacs

$100 Price Increase Due to Rising Component Costs

MACWORLD EXPO, TOKYO, March 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple® (Nasdaq: AAPL - news) today announced it has shipped more than 125,000 new flat-panel iMac® computers since its launch in January and is now shipping over 5,000 new iMacs per day. The new iMac's infinitely adjustable 15-inch LCD flat-panel display, powerful G4 processor, optional SuperDrive(TM) and stunning design have made it the most popular new Apple product since the original iMac was launched in 1998.

``Customer demand for the new iMac has been off the charts and we have simply been unable to keep up with it. We are now in volume production, shipping over 5,000 new iMacs per day, and hope to catch up with demand soon,'' said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. ``We appreciate our customers' and resellers' patience during this ramp-up period.''

Apple today also announced that due to significant increases in component costs for memory and LCD flat-panel displays, the company will increase the price of all new iMac models by $100 (US). Effective immediately, the new suggested retail price for all three models will be $1,399 (US) for the 700 MHz G4 with CD-RW drive; $1,599 (US) for the 700 MHz G4 with Combo drive;and $1,899 (US) for the 800 MHz G4 with SuperDrive. Apple will honor all existing reseller orders and Apple online store orders as of today at the original pricing of $1,299 (US) for the 700 MHz G4 with CD-RW drive; $1,499 (US) for the 700 MHz G4 with Combo drive; and $1,799 (US) for the 800 MHz G4 with SuperDrive respectively.

``Rapidly increasing component costs is an industry-wide issue right now. Since the new iMac's launch in January, memory costs have tripled and flat-panel costs have increased twenty-five percent, with little relief in sight,'' said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. ``Some manufacturers are de-configuring their models in response to these rising costs-reducing memory and disk drive capacity, for example. We've chosen to raise prices by $100 and stick with our three fully-configured new iMac models.''

All new iMac models include Mac® OS X and Apple's award-winning suite of software for creating digital photos, movies and music and burning them on CDs and DVDs (models with SuperDrive).

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Apple is committed to bringing the best personal computing experience to students, educators, creative professionals and consumers around the world through its innovative hardware, software and Internet offerings.

$100 on each model is bad... but it's not the end of the world. They might sell a few less machines but at this point it's better they sell less and piss off less people who have been waiting for their iMac to come in for months.

Matsu brings up a good point. If LCD prices have went up that much, why haven't other companies raised their prices?

Matsu, you are the stereotypical poster on this forum. The kind that had a columnist calling this site the dreg of the Apple sites on the net last year. Calm down. This is so unimportant in the scheme of things. Your life will continue as will all of ours.

you're posting this bullshit like you know everything for a fact. you know nothing.

if memory and LCD prices are on the rise so much the imac has to have its price increased on all models why didn't any of the portables? Makes no sense. especially considering the iBook probably has even small margins than the iMac
