Apple to hold in-store Apps for (RED) event with Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump
Apple on Wednesday announced a special live music event featuring Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, who will be performing and talking about Apple's GarageBand app as part of the company's Apps for (RED) AIDS initiative.
Publicized through Apple's official App Store Twitter account, the event set for tomorrow will see Stump, lead vocalist and guitarist of Fall Out Boy, discuss how Apple's GarageBand fits in with his creative process. Stump is slated to appear at the SoHo Apple Store in New York City at 8 p.m., where he will also perform live.
Stump's appearance is a continuation of Apple's Apps for (RED) campaign, which itself is part of a wider initiative to help fight the spread of AIDS worldwide. The company last week announced a fundraising campaign that offers exclusive app content from top app developers, with sales going toward (RED)'s global fund. GarageBand, which tacked on a loop pack for $0.99, is among the apps with special content available through Dec. 7.
In addition to the Apps for (RED) campaign, Apple made donations based on retail sales and handed out iTunes gift cards with select hardware purchases on Black Friday. A portion of Apple Store sales taken in on Cyber Monday was also donated to the cause. Finally, Apple Stores around the world changed the color of their iconic logos to red in honor of World AIDS Day.
The SoHo Apple Store consistently features sit-down sessions with big-name actors, musicians, directors and more. Today, for example, Seth MacFarlane of The Family Guy fame and composer Joel McNeely hyped a new Christmas album called "Holiday for Swing!," and on Friday, Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, and Tavi Gevinson, will be in store to discuss their new film "This Is Our Youth." Next week on Dec. 10, "Downton Abbey" cast members Hugh Bonneville, Allen Leech, and Rob James-Collier are scheduled for a meet-and-greet.

This is pretty cool that it's about music and (RED), not a cynical and shallow stunt to generate a line - like with a MS Store grand-opening.
Patrick Stump's presentation was amazing. Given a few implausible lyrics I presume were created by the SoHo Store geniuses, he composed a few measures using GarageBand and his guitar. It was fascinating to see how quickly he put together the beginnings of what could easily become a popular song with nothing but an iPad and a $5 app. It's not often you get to see how artistic creativity really happens. As we watched, he did it in the span of about five minutes, without any apparent preparation.
His voice is incredible. Better than any male singer I have ever heard.

It starts to build up about halfway in. It must be hard to put something together like that in front of a live audience but it really shows how powerful the iPad can be with the right software and the right talent behind it.
That's what I was thinking, but he certainly made it look easy!
