I think the A7 isn't a flagship model and is just a rushed stop-gap based on the A5 while they work on the next flagship, the S6.  PC advisor thinks it will be £399, a tad more than the A5 which I think it is destined to replace.

In the US, when they first came out, the 16GB Galaxy S5 listed for $599 and 16GB iPhone 5s listed for $649. (It seems that there was no 32GB for the S5, though they were available in other countries.) The 32GB iPhone 5s was $749 and 64GB was $849.  The Galaxy S5 was released 6 months after the iPhone 5s. There were many models of the Galaxy S5 and some listed for $799 and above.

Both 16GB base model were $199 with a contract. (When first released.)

But I think, but not sure, that the Samsung phones were unlocked when purchased at full retail price. The iPhone usually aren't available unlocked until some time later. But the price remained the same.

Most reviews didn't put the Galaxy S5 as any better than the 6 month old iPhone 5s and stated that it wasn't even much of an improvement over the Galaxy S4. It sold well at the start but sales took a nose dive within weeks. Which was why it went on sale in just a month after release.  And it's still on sale because Samsung thought the S5 was going to be their best selling phone ever and made too many of them.

And as we've seen, Samsung adds so much crap over a basic Android build that their 16GB device has less than 8GB remaining for the user before they even turn it on.

The Verizon and Sprint iPhones have the GSM side unlocked from the factory. And now that T-Mobile is on board those iPhones are sold unlocked right from the start.
