My iPhone 5s and 6 both count steps on our elliptical like a champ. Confidence is high the watch will as well.

The problem I see with all these wearables, Apple Watch included, is the price.

I use a nifty little app called Pacer that duplicates a lot of the functionality of this Fitbit. It syncs through iCloud, keeps historical data and exports.

    Price: free.

    Apple Watch? $350 and counting.

There is such a wealth of magnificent apps for the iPhone, generally costing very little, if anything, that the number of people who really need separate hardware must be so small. It’s as though the Apple Watch is starting to go directly against Apple's ethos. The iPhone replaced all manner of devices, which cumulatively cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. The iPad, ditto.

The Apple Watch is like a DSLR camera. Nice if you really need it, but with a potential market of a tiny fraction of people.

How big is your wrist? Either you have very slender wrists or that is a massive bit of plastic. Frankly it just looks terrible.

Yep. It looks like a blood pressure armband one would wear at a doctors office.

are you being deliberately obtuse? apps are proprietary, but if they support HealthKit then that is negated because you can get your data out of them. thats the point people care about -- the data, not the app.

As someone who bought it yesterday, I can say that so far I'm happy. It's not nearly as bulky despite the pictures as I was expecting and it's pretty comfortable- I forget it's there (I have small wrists and wear the small size, I could've gone with the large but didn't care to). The battery is still over 90% and I messed with it a lot. The screen is basic but that's all I need, the time is always showing and the backlight is easy. No issues with the heart monitor nor the sleep tracker, both work fine. The texting works great except for mms which sucks. It's not 100% with steps but pretty close for a ballpark idea. I haven't tested the GPS out on a run yet so we'll see about that one. I got a good deal on it for $185 which I'm satisfied but $250's kind of pushing its limit. With the exception of Nike+ and a standalone music player, this watch does everything else I need right now. The Apple Watch is going to be a hit but I'm going to wait for gen 2 after seeing how Apple can improve its battery life and integrated GPS but I can tell already I'll be happy with this for at least a year.

    No.

Your response seemed to indicate Fitbit app was proprietary and some/all others weren’t.

Then according your definition above, Fitbit app is NOT proprietary because there are plenty of ways to get Fitbit data out of the app.

Fitbit has created and support developer APIs to do just that! and they have done it pretty much from the beginning.

That’s show Sync Solver gets Fitbit data to the Health app.

Lack of internal GPS is going to be a major problem for anyone seriously interested in fitness outside of a gym.  Personally I'm waiting for built in GPS and 4G like the new Timex.

Been using Tactiohealth for years, feel no need to switch over to Healthkit now as still lacking some of that functionality.  Only downside with Tactiohealth now is it now synchs over iCloud rather than through its own login.
