Yeah, Samsung pooped out a new litter of mongrels a month or so after Apple's offering. They had to rush them to market with worse shortages than Apple experienced. It was not pretty and had the stink of desperation. Recently they also announced (I don't think they shipped) a phone/phablet with a metal case (a la Apple). And, I'm sure you heard Apple is out-selling Samsung in their own home country... Samsung is SOOOO screwed!

Gives a whole new meaning to being 'properly fucked'.

The way Google is heading with Android, OEMs will only be able to differentiate themselves through hardware. It is great to see HTC, LG and Sony trying to create different and unique hardware designs, but software is the key to truly being different.

Yet where did that get Palm, and BB? There's absolutely no way that the market will support 6-7 different OSs.

MS's only problem now is Google apps. Doesn't seem Google will ever develop for Windows.

Maybe some people don't care, but a lot do.

But, why on earth would they want Google free access (none of their own software differentiation) so their stuff becomes even more commoditized. This kind of thing hasn't worked so well for PC makers who can't earn anything despite selling millions of units.

By Android taking all the profits, there will be a severe erosion of the top end of the Android market (OEM increasingly don't have money to compete head to head with Apple in differentiating hardware and have to pick off the shelf low end components). This has already happened with the Samsung debacle at the top end and HTC suffering. LG is the only vendor other than Samsung which has had a profit last year!

What will happen is that many won,t see the point in staying with Android. Even app develloppers barely make a living off it. The Chinese makers, which don't use the Play store or any Google apps, will become a big problem for Android in most of Asia, eastern Europe and eventually even Africa.

I agree with you. I highlighted the parts that DED has recently written about and what the Chinese are doing. Seeing all of this in real-time is very interesting.

Blackberry chose to resist change on the hardware side. Palm had an interesting WebOS, but chose to try to one-up Apple instead of exclusively promoting itself. The ex-Apple employee in charge of Android seemed to have a grudge against Apple and wanted to show he could beat Apple at being Apple with Palm.

I think the only way a new operating system will be able to become successful is for a new market to appear. This new market has to be something that makes people wonder why it had never existed.

At the moment, I think and hope Apple will be the company that does this with true holographic and interactive technologies. No glasses or goggles will be needed to view and interact with the holograms. Time will tell.

They have an impressive strategy with windows 10. They just need developers to really support it and it could really turn things around. They are just so far behind.

LOL... Developers are EVERYTHING in this segment of the mobile phone market. Sans developers, Microsoft has nothing.

I'd like to see how difficult or easy it is to write a desktop Windows 10 app and convert it over to a phone or tablet. How will it look? What work goes into the new form factor?

Also, if the app is on a tablet, does it look like a tablet app when it is not attached to keyboard and act and look like a desktop when the keyboard is attached?

It is easy to say that if it works on a desktop, it will work on a phone. We shall see.

But good for one platform OS. Great for developers if it works. The problem is that Win Phone is pretty dead now. They have a real row to hoe there.
