The only thing that makes Google Maps "excellent" is the massive amount of data behind it. Their user interface - both on the web and in mobile apps - is crap. I curse Google every time I have to use their lame map interface.
I think the "massive amount of data behind it" was really my point. A good front-end is all very well but it's value can be no higher than the data behind it.
Saw the white one this morning at the Cavallero Transit Center in Scotts Valley, just after reading this article. This was a strange, why would they be here of all places. The center is used for pickup and dropoff for the Apple shuttle.
Yeah, but the cameras totally have Focus Pixels. " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
What's funny is that I read a comment on an Apple hater site that said: "Apple is like 2-3 years behind top Android phones in specs, but the iPhone runs so smooth! I can't even get my camera apps to launch fast enough on my [redacted]!"
I mean, jeez, these people have some awareness that specs aren't everything, yet they still value specs like it was the only reason to feel good about what you bought.
I don't see Street View as a gimmick at all. When I was buying a house, I saved hours of time by not visiting places that I could see weren't suitable only by looking on SV. Same thing goes for organising vacations, places to meet people, seeing if shops are worth visiting, plotting a ride/run, finding the name of a business when you only know the appx address, and hey, even stalking my family from the other side of the world when I feel a bit homesick. Maps only get you so far when you don't know an area at the ground level. It would be great if Google gets some competition but sadly I doubt Apple will have the same geo coverage
I wonder about an Apple-designed vehicle. Would they do something traditionally aerodynamic?
Or something completely new?
Now, I know they’ll blow the thing out with tech. I hope there’s a projection system for the windshield. That’s a great place for information. Heck, have NO DASHBOARD AT ALL. No way would Apple have mechanical dials on their car; just put all that information on the windshield. No more looking up and down, etc.

Good fuel economy and taller ride height also.

When I passed the van, the driver had his hands on the wheel.

You think having flyover was skating to where the puck was? Nothing like flyover was mass deployed at the time.
I agree about flyover. It was new but I just think it's a gimmick. Street View may be clunky but it's real data conveying useful information.

I saw a very similar vehicle on H-3 in Hawaii this morning:

It looks like Big Hero 6 fell on the roof of that van and went "splat!"
It's certainly less obtrusive looking than the Google Street View cars, even without the gaudy paint job on the Google car.
I would imagine these will be collecting multiple forms of data that will be integrated into several different aspects of Apple Maps.

Apple testing mysterious camera-equipped vehicles in the Bay Area
Why do they have to be testing these vehicles?
Looks like they are getting data and/or testing the equipment on top.
?Cart.
I saw one of these in San Diego today.
Cool. It's called a car.
Cool. It's called a car.
Actually, it’s called a “mini-van”...
Sorry; my mistake.
I wonder if Jonny Ive has an iVan? I've no idea.
