I worry that this may negatively affect Wii U sales, as this system does not get the credit it deserves in the home console market. It is the only game system that is churning out original and ingenuitive games that are most importantly FUN. But now that Nintendo has a few years of working with a tablet under their belt, playing some original titles from this amazing gaming company is incredibly exciting.

I would fucking kill for Nintendo games on the iPad, that can be controlled through the Wii U Pro controller. I love Nintendo as much as I love Apple. They're complete shit at marketing, but their 1st party games are the best in the world.

I agree that the Wii U is by far the best buy in terms of consoles, and have the highest quality games. Every single game I own is AAA+ quality. Unfortunately, it's more of a marketing problem for Nintendo, and their decision to create confusion by using the same name and a similar looking console was the height of stupidity. There's people to this day that still do not know if the Wii U is a brand new system or some kind of Add-on.

Can't wait for the new Zelda.

If Apple made exclusive games for the iPad, you REALLY don't think it would sell more iPads? No, not everyone cares about games or Nintendo, but many people do, and many appreciate the quality. The best of both worlds- Nintendo's quality software, without their weird hardware, and instead on a gorgeous and mobile iPad that can also be airplayed to an Apple TV. Most people love Nintendo games but hate buying their hardware. If the next major Mario game was exclusive to the iPad (that will never happen), both Apple and Nintendo would make a killing.

I’m considering a WiiU, but am having trouble justifying it to myself if it’ll only be a few games. For me it’d only be Smash Bros 4, Pikmin 3, Splatoon, and Zelda U. My sister (who lives with me) would have a few of her own, plus her library of Wii games.

And I know that if this program really takes off, there’s a chance that WiiU games could be ported to OS X. I don’t care how small that chance is, I WANT IT TO HAPPEN. I’ve been trying to migrate my gaming to my computer from my consoles in the recent past, getting ROMs of my NES, N64, GameCube, and Wii games and just playing them on my Mac. I’d just hate to buy things twice, is all. Never mind that rumors are growing of Nintendo’s console WiiU successor coming out sooner rather than later.

Oh, and on both of those points, why doesn’t the WiiU upconvert Wii games to 1080p?! Dolphin, the GameCube/Wii emulator, will play Wii games in FAR higher resolution than the system was designed to. Yes, the bitmap textures would look a little pixelated, but all the vertices just expand beautifully. N64 games in super high resolution are just as possible. At least Nintendo could have given us that option with the WiiU hardware. I would have purchased a WiiU on launch day if they’d done that.

There’s an incredibly Apple-like quality to Nintendo’s hardware and software offerings. Everything from the music to the gameplay to the worldbuilding is crafted with an insane amount of care. Plus, there are parallels in the leadership. Miyamoto is their Jobs (and I shudder to think what will happen when he dies), and Charles Martinet is… sort of also their Jobs, but in terms of character importance (he voices Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, and several other characters).

Is there anything proprietary about Nintendo’s Bluetooth implementation on the controller? Can this be done?

Oh, answered my own question. Now I wonder about the Wii U controller (the one with touchscreen)…

It's amazing the best console on the market has the worst sales!!

Apple should really negotiate exclusive deals. The biggest, greatest, most critically acclaimed developer is coming to town and Apple is just standing by?!!

It would break my heart to see their games running on an Android device.

I'll ask again (well addressed to someone different), what would be their leverage? Right now the only thing that matters is whether Nintendo views Android as being worth the effort in terms of resource requirements relative to earning potential.

    What, Apple’s or Nintendo’s?

Nintendo’s leverage is the fact that they’re the only company in the console game making any money whatsoever. They make money on every piece of hardware (like Apple), and they do it by selling great software that only works on that hardware (like Apple). Apple would sell more hardware with Nintendo as software on it.

Apple’s leverage is the existing popularity of their hardware platform providing an order of magnitude larger customer base (meaning USE base) for the software Nintendo would bring to it. Nintendo will sell more software (SINCE NINETY PERCENT OF ANDROID SOFTWARE IS PIRATED) if it sells only on Apple’s hardware.

That isn't really leverage for Apple in terms of negotiations. The other two wanted to see an agreement on Nintendo's part that is independent of whether Android is worthwhile from a financial perspective. If Nintendo decided not to deal with Android for reasons such as those that you mentioned, that wouldn't require any kind of exclusivity agreement. They just simply wouldn't bother with development.

You are correct in that point...guess I was just making the point that if Nintendo was not exclusive to iOS, people would still choose iPads and iPhones.  The Nintendo software would look and perform better on iOS too so that would attract people.  Not the fact of exclusivity.

yes buy them. but then combine Wii with Apple TV and convert all the DS games to iOS. without cross platform of course.

this move is Nintendo's surrender. they'll be totally out of the hardware business in 5 years.
    HIGHLY doubtful

There's a ton of things on which I don't agree with you, but this isn't one of them. There are indeed massive parallels in the philosophies of both companies. They both operate in their own world so to speak, doing things their own way, because of their own convictions, regardless of what others think. Nintendo sticks to their principles and does not "sell out" in their beliefs, as Apple tends to do.

TBH I haven't turned on my Wii U in a while, but every minute I've had with it is gold. If you love Nintendo games, it's a no brainer. Just don't expect too much in terms of 3rd parties- but I knew this going in, and could not care less. These are the games I currently own (I've sold the others): Mario Kart 8, Mario 3D World, NSMB U, Wind Waker HD, Hyrule Warriors, Super Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. To me, these games already more and justify the purchase price, as they're all awesome. Mario 3D World alone justified the purchase for me, as it's the most gorgeous and brilliant Mario game I've yet played. I mean really, how many games do you need? I'm not one to buy 50+ games for a console- I don't have time nor the interest, so a few great ones are enough. And to be honest there's nothing for me that evokes more joy than Mario and Zelda games.

Oh my goodness, if you are even considering it, then just BUY ONE! Honestly, you will not regret it. The games you mentioned are worth the purchase alone, but there are so many gems you will discover that you had no idea even existed before. The new Rayman, Captain Toad, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart, Sonic Lost World and any of the Lego games are also all amazing, plus the myriad of party games (multiplayer games are such a dying breed nowadays, except on Wii U). Honestly, I can't recommend it enough. My Wii U collection is way more extensive than any system I have ever owned (well, except for maybe SNES).

I couldn't imagine playing anything from the Zelda series on an iPhone.  I think I'd give up mobile gaming again if this means the end of Nintendo mobile hardware.

Nintendo could make a controller for iOS. I expect it would appeal most to iPad users but would work for any iOS device hooked up to a TV. They sell these for $50 for the Wii U so do the same for iOS, just customise the same controller to get MFi certification. The active iPad userbase is well over 100 million users. The Wii U has sold about 9.2m units in 3 years and is only adding 1-2m units per year now. Controller and software sales would be more profitable than the Wii U since it launched:

    http://www.statista.com/statistics/216625/net-income-of-nintendo-since-2008/

Even after all those huge losses, they have about $10b in assets so they're going nowhere for at least a decade or two, which is enough time to sort things out. They don't have much of an opportunity to grow the Wii U but they can't really bring out another console so soon. It doesn't even make much sense to bring out another console box at all. Games on iOS can at least bring in some profit and keep the brand visible while they figure out their next hardware move in 3-5 years time.

Man it would be a pain to hold a controller and try to game on an iPad when there is already a platform (3DS) for that.

I've been saying for years that Nintendo should be doing this.   Port the Best hits from the NES up to say the N64.  They could even advertise their newest stuff and say only available on the Wii U or their portable device.  That's called target advertising!!!  The number of Smartphones compared to Nintendo Portables isn't even close, the smartphone wins by a mile!!!     Nintendo could even release their own branded Bluetooth controller to use to play their games.  iOS has controller support these days.    Releasing the old stuff is not going to hurt sales of their newest stuff or kill Hardware sales more then they all ready are.

Forget cash cow, Nintendo is sitting on a cash elephant, and don't see it because they don't look down.

Apple is a hardware company and Nintendo only made hardware so they could sell more software.  Let Apple make the hardware and Nintendo can concentrate on software.  Nintendo would rake it in.

The developer for Crossy Road already proved overwhelming demand for a great Nintendo-like game on iOS. I want Donkey Kong remade by this dev!

They'd probably make a billion dollars on Donkey Kong alone.

I honestly suspect that to avoid this they will use their original out-of-the box thinking Nintendo ingenuity and come up with some cool games with swipe and motion controls for some super awesome FUN! That's what Nintendo brings to the table and that will be absolutely perfect on an iOS device, for sure.

Nintendo make a number a games that would function perfectly well with a touch interface - the tactical RPG series Fire Emblem and tactical strategy game Advance Wars are examples of this.

Nintendo makes awesomely great controller hardware. This could be just the thing needed to push the MFi standard forward, which Apple is unfortunately happy to let wallow in mediocrity.

Either that or we're in for an even bigger onslaught of mediocre Pokemon titles.
