Mophie debuts 'Watch Dock' for Apple Watch with aluminum and leather construction
Aftermarket accessory maker Mophie on Tuesday announced it, too, will have an Apple Watch dock ready for purchase at the end of April, joining a growing number of manufacturers ready to cash in on early adopters.
Dubbed simply "Watch Dock," Mophie's Apple Watch charging solution boasts an elegant pedestal design built from aluminum. Leather accents cover the plinth and upper arm where Apple Watch sits during charging, offering a protective barrier against scratches.
As with other Apple Watch docks, Mophie's product is designed to accept the magnetic inductive charging cable Apple includes with each Apple Watch purchase. Cable routing is accomplished via an internal channeling system, while the entire dock weighs in at only 3.86 ounces.
Watch Dock's design is arguably sleeker than Griffin's WatchStand, a pedestal that more closely resembles a monolithic pillar. The base of Griffin's dock includes a lip for propping up an iPhone, but its columnar design means Apple Watch must be seated sideways while charging. Mophie's articulated arm design, on the other hand, allows for upright docking.
Mophie's Watch Dock can be preordered now for $59.95 and is expected to ship on April 24, the same day Apple Watch orders arrive.

"Cash in"? Early adopters aren't casino chips.
They're a vital link in the technology adoption story.
This upwards facing design seems focused on charging the watch in the middle of the day at your desk. Mophie aren't alone in this design, and I feel it misses the mark because it's a set up that would normally be used for a smartphone, not a watch.
Watch boxes are a better approach - simply design one in which the watch stores in a vertical alignment, helpfully positioned and angled low for a bedside placement. In many ways apple's edition watch box is ideal for reading the time while laying horizontal in bed, but could be improved in this capacity (that and it's only available for Edition.)
I hope this is better constructed than Mophie's battery pack/iPhone cases. Those were complete garbage, each one failing within 3-4 months.
Mophie is not on my to-buy list anymore.

it's not stupid if you find value in it. our cats love Apple chsrging cables more than anything, so this provides value for our use case -- set this on the bedside table, snake the cable behind the table, and cover it in aluminum wrap. that's what we have to do elsewhere with other docks. and the one I linked to provides double chsrging for both the watch and phone.

Why is it so tall? But I agree that let's wait and see what Apple gives us for free before spending more money
