SEC probes bond disclosure in L.A. school district's failed iPad program - report

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a probe into whether investors and other parties were properly informed about bonds being put towards the Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad program, a report said on Friday.

The inquiry is still informal, but was discovered in documents provided to the Los Angeles Times. The SEC itself has refused to confirm or deny anything, but the school district said it recently met with an SEC attorney, and also that it believes it dealt with the agency's concerns.

Before it was abandoned, the effort to distribute iPads among L.A. students was valued at $1.3 billion. The LAUSD is asking for millions of dollars in refunds from the project's main partners, Apple and Pearson, as well as two other companies, Lenovo and distributor Arey Jones. It's threatening legal action if it can't reclaim the money.

Pearson appears to be main target of the LAUSD, since it did not have curriculum content ready before the start of the iPad project, and never delivered everything promised. In March an internal memo complained that only two out of 69 schools were using Pearson digital materials regularly, while the rest had "given up on attempting regular use of the app." LAUSD officials have expressed a willingness to meet with the likes of Apple and Lenovo to discuss reclaiming cash from Pearson.

The FBI is pursuing a criminal investigation into whether Apple and Pearson were given an unfair advantage towards winning LAUSD contracts. The debacle led to the October resignation of former district superintendent John Deasy.

Since last year the district has begun using other devices in schools, such as Chromebooks and the Microsoft Surface.

Why are all your posts such utter, non-sensical trash?

I'm still waiting for you to backup the lie in which you stated that I always "claim that Apple is perfect". I asked you to provide one example, and you did not. Nice to know you're still using that bald-faced lie as an attack line against everything else.

Also, if you managed to read the fucking article it makes no such claim or argument, and simply lays out what has been reported and the facts we know. But you're too damned lazy to actually read what you're pretending to comment on. People like you, with no intention to have honest discussion or comments, should not have posting privileges. You've proven you're incapable of honesty time and time again.

You didn't read the article did you? Because it's not an editorial piece. It's just an update on the case.

I wonder how much is being paid for the Chromebooks and Surface tablets. What kind of headaches with those deals are being kept silent in order to demonize the deal the former LA superintendent made to get the iPads and Pearson software?

Could very well be all about one set of corrupt payoffs being swapped out for another.

This isn't some conspiracy against Apple.

If only you could do that to people in real life.
