Safari share may catch up a bit on the desktop (er, laptop) now that Chrome has been revealed to be such a battery hog. (But I bet Google fixes that some day.)
You don't need to click on an ad for Google to make money. They made their money when the ad was placed. That is, the advertiser buys the ad. It's exactly the same model as junk mail: the advertiser pays the USPS to stuff your mailbox. Google sells ads using an auction, so advertisers compete with each other to outspend their competitors on shoving ads in your face, and Google makes a fortune off that.
That may be one option for Google ads, but the default is pay-per-click. The user 'bids' for an ad display slot against other users, buy you are only charged by Google if someone clicks on your ad. I prefer this to the pay-per-impression, because Google has an incentive to pick ads which are more suitable (i.e. more people will click on them).
52.6% of people enjoy selling themselves down the river to Mountain View. Shameful.
Because a LOT of people these days are too ignorant and too stupid to care or know any better that THEY are Google's product... I try to explain this and teach this to everyone I come across willing to listen, and it doesn't take me long to persuade them away from anything and everything Google. And most of the time, they are much happier in the end!

I've seen them on rare occasions, but you're correct, that I almost never allow any apps or content with ads to touch my gear.

Isn't it almost comical how Gatorguy shows up in a heartbeat, acting as Google's spokesperson, for anything even remotely hinting Google material?
I've migrated away from pretty much every Google service, with the only exception being the occasional usage of YouTube, which I am also trying to move away from. Things are so much better outside the sphere of Google influence it's amazing!
Comical is how you never successfully dispute what I write either. Belittling is all ya got? If so you already lost IMHO.
Your opinion means absolutely ZERO to me, so you can say whatever you want. You're just another Google lapdog, and your trail of pro-Google commentary supports that statement.
I will give you credit for one thing though, there have been times where you provide some useful info on Google's products, but it's something best served being posted to pro-Android boards, and not on a pro-Apple site.
I have no particular problem with Gatorguy, but the thread makes me think of Andy Ihnatko of late. He is a regular on the TWIT podcast, MacBreak Weekly, and over the years has evolved into an Andoid apologist. Very annoying, as he used to be a total Mac guy.

Misinformation and FUD isn't restricted to Android sites is it?
As far as pro-Google I've certainly complained about them when it's deserved so I'm not blind to their misbehavior, even going so far as referring to them as a liar in an AI post I made a few weeks ago. It's also very rare, almost unheard of, for me to be the one who first brings them up in an unrelated thread.
The difference you might see between me and some others that post Google comments here is I don't make stuff up to hit 'em with and if someone else does I'm likely to point it out if no one else does first. I'd do the same with false Apple complaints I was aware of if no one else stepped up to do so. Obviously there's seldom if ever a need to.
You should appreciate facts rather than FUD instead of complaining about it. Repeating falsehoods benefits no one, wouldn't you agree?
I think you've misread the data. WW = worldwide, not windows. But yes, like you say, I doubt anyone uses Safari on Windows anymore, it's been out of production for years. Older systems tend to use Firefox as it's less demanding than Chrome.
I've tried Firefox, but it's been getting boated for a number of years. I really don't find it faster then Chrome. IE8 which is the newest version I can run on XP is snail slow. It's really bad.

I have given up on Chrome since I found web pages just don't work properly. I was doing some research recently for a job interview using my Nexus 5, yes I use android as well as iOS. The menu selection buttons on the web page wouldn't respond when I selected them. I tried it on my iPhone and they worked perfectly so I went back to my Nexus 5 and tried Firefox. Firefox worked perfectly too. Google will probably say they the website was not optimised for mobile which is why it wouldn't work, but the fact is it worked with both Safari and Firefox.
Does Apple? Or Microsoft? The only thing I've seen is regurgitated numbers from outside analysts and trackers, not numbers sourced from the companies themselves.
There's another Google I/O coming up and I would guess they'll announce updated numbers.
Not sure why I would trust those numbers. Not sure Google should either. I have seen way too many things that would count as an "Android device" that likely shouldn't.
Why would 5% of Windows users even be using Safari?
Speak for yourself. I use Safari 5 exclusively when I’m booted into Windows.
It's such a old crappy browser at this point.
In what way?
Talking about being stuck and not changing your ways.
Enjoy your delusions! It’s the best browser for the OS. Spartan is a joke.
I’m using Chrome…
Enjoy your malware.
I just don't get why anyone would be using Safari on Windows.
Because even without support or updates or active work, it’s still the best browser available.
Kind of embarrassing to Windows that it’s now known as the OS that doesn’t retain support for things while OS X is. Eight year old hardware can run the newest software, but Windows is dropping support for three year old parts.

TS, I really tried to use Safari on Windows. Really. The first efforts were more than 5 years ago but at the time Explorer just worked better for me. About a year and a half ago I tried yet again to see if some of the occasional issues with email attachments from Apple users would go way. Still not really usable as far as I was concerned nor did it eliminate the somewhat rare attachment problems. I honestly don't see understand why anyone having to work in a Windows environment would benefit from using Safari, other than a "feel-good" because it's from Apple. Not nearly the convenience features of other available browsers, at least in my experience and even Apple doesn't see it as worthwhile do they?
