why the hell would it need Stylus support for these tasks you mentioned (textbooks, journal articles, newspaper and such)?

Dude, 42mm is big enough for most. I don't deny that some big dudes live Flavor Flav may want a bigger screen, but 55mm is not what I can see it coming...Maybe, the most would be close to 50mm.

you are right.  Just seeing a pattern with Apple.  A pattern of bigger screens.

    2014 - bigger iPhone

    2015 - bigger iPad

    2016 - bigger Retina Display ( 60+ inch)

    2017 - bigger Watch

    Thinner.

    Then bigger.

    Repeat.

I can see the pattern for flagship products, but accessories? not really.

I suggest that you do exactly that. Apple is not going to please people who desire what you desire. You'll find yourself in good company along with the 726 other people who own Surface tablets.

I believe one of the complaints from schools implementing iPads was that the 9.7" screen was a bit small. I've seen a number of posters who said a larger screen would be great for placing on a music stand and reading/playing music. Artists, photographers, anyone reading manuals a lot, etc would likely find this very useful.

As a marketer, I look at this screen size as being perfect for doing client presentations... Also if one is running two apps side by side in landscape mode, each will have about the same real estate as two iPad Airs in portrait mode side by side. I like that!

I understand many of those MS Surfaces are being used as props to hide the iPad work horse doing content creation and serving up data. Maybe in 5 years much of the iOS apps will be ported over to the Surface Pro, so it too can do content creation and "real" work.

If Apple releases this, I am definitely purchasing one. I need a replacement for my MacBook Air and am not interested in any of Apple's new laptops.

This thing should have superior battery life to any MacBook with the upcoming A9 which should also outperform the Core M all for less cost than the rMB. And the pad will have a plethora of software available for it.

I have purchased my last laptop. No plans to go back to one. My current iPad gets the vast majority if the action. The laptop is simply rarely used.

Interesting observation (two iPad Air screens side-by-side in landscape). That makes me think, what do we think the screen resolution and pixel density will be on such a device?

    Indeed.

I just hope that if this gets the 'pro' moniker, it will truly have pro features, i.e. pressure sensitive/digitizer display.

The current iPad with it's capacitive screen doesn't cut it for those using a stylus for professional creative applications.

There are different use case scenarios for people who have multifaceted lifestyles. When relaxing in the family room watching TV, I might occasionally use my iPad to look up something. When at the office, I use a Mac Pro or an iMac. When traveling, I use my rMBP. I also use my home iMac if I want to compose a lengthy email or do some serious writing. You don't need to characterize people as uptight or bored just because they work and relax differently. I look at it as just choosing the right tool for the job. Sometimes it is an iPad, but in my case, I would not gain any benefit from an iPad Pro because it would not replace my MBP and for my typical iPad use it offers no additional benefits by just being larger.

That's right, different use cases and preferences, different tools. From the beginning, the most important feature of the iPad was clearly (to me anyway) the lack of a keyboard. Right now the keyboard would be perched on a pillow on my chest, hard as hell to type on it like that. It's useless when standing in line at the bank, awkward on the bus or the train, in the way riding shotgun with a friend.

I jumped on him because he said he was bored, and acted like his use case should apply to others. (His post is quoted right after yours above.) The same kind of thinking kept people from even discovering keyboard liberation in the beginning in 2010. It really pissed me off when "it's just a big iPod touch" became the knee-jerk mantra back then.

Same thing here. No one is imagining how photographers and movie makers are going to eat this piece of glass up. Probably IGZO at 300 dpi. It will be nuts. And again, hardly anyone sees that the size of the slab of glass is what makes it so beautiful. Bored indeed. For shame.

Engineering applications, retail, banking, brokerage applications where a screen is used as a sort of kiosk to share information with a customer.  Hey, a large screen could be laid flat on a table, and then split to show information to a customer on one half while showing information to a broker, for example, on the other half, with the two halves upside down relative to one another and having different information/application controls presented on each half.  That would make for an interesting interaction context.  Better than passing a tablet back and forth, I think.  I imagine I could sit here all evening coming up with one after another potential application/context where such a device would be advantageous.

I have personally never warmed to the 9.7" original iPad size. I love my iPad mini for traveling and would love a 12" lap-iPad for home use. Size would be great for internet, email and streaming and it could easily be set aside when not in use. There's certainly separate needs for a mountain bike and a road bike. Likewise, this larger iPad would certainly find a home. Literally!

I owned a Surface Pro 3 for a week and it was great. Unfortunately it was no good to me as I need to carry a Mac with me so I couldn't find a role for it. If Apple made a Mac/iPad like that I would buy it in a heartbeat (I would have kept it if it was able to run OS X fully). On the plus side I sold it on and used the proceeds to buy an Apple watch.

-You can run software without 'kneeling before the appStore.'  Go research the Apple Enterprise Developer Program.  Any company that would be buying iPad Pros is already a part of this program.

-iOS8 apps can share data without breaking sandboxing.

Any other fails you want to type to make a fool of yourself?

And how much does that cost? So I have to pay exorbitant annual fees for the privilege of not having to kneel before the iOS App Store on a device I own?

Remember this is a company that thought crude pixelated body scans in Papers Please were pornographic!

I'd go so far as to suggest that disallowing apps from other venders is a form of monopolisation that's probably illegal in the EU. I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed further.

For the most part the locked down "walled garden" iOS system works well to protect users but users should not have to pay exorbitant annual fees for choosing to put themselves at risk and run software outside of App Store.

Well it would have more uses than that but in any case editing/annotating a scientific journal article would be great with a stylus. You have to get away from ascii.

Said Steve Jobs at the 2007 iPhone launch. So yes, the finger is, for a phone.

I do creative work so I am the market for it. I hope there is pressure sensitivity and a more powerful version of iOS. If i can also make do with it as a laptop alternative then it's a phenomenal product for me. All I am saying is it better be more than just a humongous iPad.
