first hit for "mfi" in google is an apple.com page describing the Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad program and the wiki page two down is also good. the "Made for Apple Watch program" in this article is a variant of that. but yes, it article could have mentioned the highly successful MFi program too.
I'm not sure that apple has iPhone case attachment patents. Watch has at least a design patent on the attach mechanism. But of course, how aggressive Apple is going to be with their patent enforcement is still unknown. Doubt they are after the mall kiosks.
I'm not sure design patent is the right term for something relating to the connector. As for cases, it's unlikely that they could patent all workable configurations of an iphone case or enforce such a thing.
