Too bad he's not black, then we could accuse him of buying Beats for a different reason. But the best would be if he were black *and* gay, well we'd have won the bigot's exacta! Woohoo!!

You disregard them at your peril.

Yeah, if MS buys BB it will be all about the server/enterprise side.

I hope this comes to pass. Blackberry deserves better than the fate the companies blunders put it in. MS has the money to do something worthwhile with it.

The other Chinese companies would merely rape and pimp it like a street corner hooker.

We only get BBs because getting an iPhone would look like we're getting a privilege. So it's only for us to use because BBs are crappy and no one wants them.

And from the above photo, it looks like the Blackberry now works much like a smartphone.   I hadn't realized they had done that.   The old UI was so incredibly awful as to be useless.   I think that if Blackberry had done better marketing, they could have survived, but if I were buying Blackberry today with the intent of releasing Blackberry devices, I think I'd kill the brand entirely and rename the thing.

I used to love the Blackberry keyboard and struggled initially with the iPhone keyboard. Now, though, with the voice recognition I don't even use the keyboard at all and in my personal experience, it's extremely fast and efficient (each person's mileage may vary). I also use Siri much more than I used to for sending messages. She's finally starting to understand English perfectly, with the occasional errors –most laughable, others not so much.

Still, it's a shame BB killed the Ryan Seacrest keyboard case. It allowed for both worlds to coexist fantastically well. :)

    Just pondering...

"One dinosaur acquiring another": perfect. If M$ thinks such an acquisition would help them compete with Apple and/or Android phones, they're more delusional than anyone previously thought.

MS is hardly a dinosaur. They have their networking act together something that Apple has never been good at. They have a server and cloud business. Windows 10 appears to be interesting and they have a gaming platform which they can use to push other things. Apple has the iPhone which if it ever lost fashion would be a severe blow to the company. Moreover, the company has a good, not great, CEO who is not powerful enough to enable the company to take chances on projects with iffy market appeal. That is, they have become a company that can't do anything radical for fear of the shareholders who generally have a short to medium view.

It also seems that the quality of the software that Apple has been putting out in recent years has not been great. Bugs, bugs, bugs, ... which never seem to get fixed.

As a radical underdog Apple was very appealing. As the status quo they are putting out safe products. Not quite as interesting. I am not saying that anyone else is doing any better but as an almost exclusively Apple and NeXT user for ages they just appear very sedate. Something was lost with Jobs and the current leadership is just another corporate head.

We only get BBs because getting an iPhone would look like we're getting a privilege. So it's only for us to use because BBs are crappy and no one wants them.

What a bunch of BS, why are BlackBerry's crap, simply because you don’t like it. Have you even used the new Passport for any extended period of time, I highly doubt it because it's an absolute gem, in fact it’s the best phone I have owned in a very long while. BB OS is not the same OS that was used in such phones as the Bold, it's a completely new system and in my opinion is a lot more powerful than iOS. Hard to swallow, well get this, not everyone wants an iPhone, I personally don’t want one because of it’s limitations.

I use my Passport to remotely login into my servers at home so I can edit scripts, restart processes, even start a compile job, which means I need the terminal app to work in the background without it terminating it's connection(s) because I simply switched over to the mail app, not just the terminal app either but every app. Another example, when I’m away from home my husband can watch a movie on the hotels TV by casting the video, while I’m still able to use the phone to surf, write an email, edit a document, finish a program, etc. iOS doesn't allow apps, except a few like iTunes to run in the background, so until Apple fixes this I will never own one, yes it's that important to me.

I can choose my own default apps in BB OS which means when I need to send a file from an app, the share function has my email of choice in its list, unlike iOS which only shows Apple mail. The share function on the Passport populates it's lists from what's installed on the system and not with hard coded apps like in iOS, so for instance when I install a cloud storage service like OneDrive I can rest assure that almost every app will have it listed under it’s share list and not just iCloud or Dropbox because the app developer made some sort of deal to only list those two.

I have a 128GB SD card, which yes I want and use quite often, it has a fantastic mechanical keyboard which I just adore, it has the best notification system I have seen yet on any phone, 3GB of memory, which means when I'm on a web forum and type up a long response I don't have to worry when I need to answer the phone or respond to a message, that my long post I had just written will still be their when I return. Unlike the iPhone which almost always refreshes the page do to it's 1GB of RAM, thus loosing all of my work in the process.

The passport has an awesome auto text, example: if I type relic followed by two clicks of the space bar my full name, address and phone number is written out, I alsp use it for code snippets, so if I type, “srchary” it spits out a function for searching an array, I have over 200 items in my auto text. Yes iOS has something similar but it’s no where near as powerful as BlackBerrys implementations and it doesn’t recognize new lines, iOS just wraparounds the text making it pretty much useless for me.

Maintaining my files in BB OS is easy, I know exactly where everything is as they all reside under Documents, Photos, Videos, etc, the built file manager can access all of my cloud services under a single app, also every app can also access the file manger directly. So when I want to open up a remote file located on say Box I can do so without having to leave the app.
Office apps like Word, Excel, WPS, EverNote, OneNote, Trello, Quip, TimefulI, FTTT(such a great app by the way) work absolutely fantastically because of the display. Also because of the 3GB I can actually use web apps without problem, I use Codenvy, a cloud service as my main development IDE, because of the Passports speed, memory and display I can actually work, something that I could never do on an iPhone and I've tried. I don’t need 50 apps either, it's a phone, I just want about 10 to 15 really good ones and I have those.

I have nothing against the iPhone either as I think it makes a good consumer device for people interested in such thing’s as games, multimedia consumption, social networking, etc. However if you need a real no B.S. work phone with incredible battery life (lasts 50% longer than iPhone 6) and the best, notification, email, messaging system out there than the Passport is a better option in my opinion.

So go right ahead and try to convince people here how crappy the Passport is or other BlackBerry phones, because it doesn’t matter, myself and the other 1.7 million people who bought one know how good they actually are.

Nah, they're switching to an Apple-style OS X release cycle, where OS X remains version 10, but only the number after 10 changes.

I wouldn't be so quick to label Microsoft a dinosaur. They brought Office to iOS (then Android). They have a great subscription service with Office 365. Windows 10 looks pretty good so far, and it appears it will be free for most people. Their new browser also looks good.

I think Microsoft with Nadella running things still has a lot of potential.

BB has underlying security technology that would be more valuable than their handset business. And they also have QNX, which is not only used in numerous mission-critical applications (medical devices, nuclear power plants and the like), but also happens to be the #1 platform for automotive infotainment.

It's hard to say if MS has been the Titanic that hit the iceberg. It's going to be a huge miracle for MS to gain any traction in phones and tablets. They might do okay with the surface.

I would love to have a Windows phone, but the apps are not there and they are not going to happen. GOD FORBID you go to the MS site and see Lumia 530, 540, 640, 1030, 6420, and so on and so forth.

The BIG PROBLEM for MS is that, although the have massive talent to get stuff done, they really, REALLY need to not release "megacorp" type products. They need the "stupid" simplicity of Apple. (Actually, Apple is losing it's sense of simplicity. I've brought this up before, but have only been attacked for speaking up. Apple is becoming the McDonalds/Taco Bell of menu items. Too many choices.)

Anyway, I bought a Dell Windows tablet and you know, you can't find a native or easy or cheap or good PDF or eBook reader. Windows 8.1 has a lot of nice to it, but it needs to be more concise. MS will fail, unfortunately. The odds are really low they will succeed. They just need a little Apple in them of simplicity of OS and offerings.

It's only free for those who have Windows 8.1. I like the direction MS is heading with Windows 10 and I truly believe it to be the best version so far but if they do go forward with a subscription service I won't be purchasing a plan. If it comes with a laptop that I'll just use it until the plan runs out.

Why don't you just use Adobe Reader for PDF's, eBook reader, try Calibre. I don't think they will fail, in fact I think their getting a lot better. I absolutely adore their Office online apps, free to. OneDrive is still the best cloud storage service that I've used to date. The Surface is also a good product, I'm actually hooked on them and can't wait for the Surface Pro 4. In fact I would much rather have a Surface Pro than a MacBook Air.

Microsoft is already acquiring rights to the new brand name which will encompass all their current phones AND the Blackberry brand: Raspberry.

    Okay, easy stuff first

    1. I love Office online. Great apps. I use on Chromebooks and iPhone 6+.

    2. One drive is awesome. I love how it segregates out artifact types into appropriate categories

    3. Surface is a great product from a "desktop" perspective.

I like iBooks and Goodreader for PDF reading. I want a mobile OS to be an mobile OS and not both. f

To dovetail these two items, Windows 8.1 GREATEST failing is not having it act like a mobile OS. Basically, if you add Google Drive to your 32 GB device, it will "blow up". That is, Google Drive will think you have a desktop/laptop computer with massive drive space and fill up quickly as it tries to replicate.

The other big problem is that when you have a tablet, you want all of the controls in the tablet view. Problem is that you have to revert to desktop view which is tiny. Try to use Chrome OS on a Windows tablet? It's okay, but you feel like you are using a Frankenstein device.

Anyway, Windows 8.1 OS is awesome and beautiful and wonderful and useful beyond what Apple iOS has in a lot of ways. I want this all to be a three legged race of OS for competition. And sorry, Android is a poor copycat of iOS.

Window OS vs. iOS/iOS X is like the Beatles vs. Beach Boys. Each one upping the other and inspired by the former.

Don't be so quick to judge Microsoft, Yes I don't like the company , yes its sucks however you have to admit it is doing a much better job of the cloud than Apple is! BBRY is not a smart phone vendor any more it has QNX and it has its enterprise mail services, Also BBRY has a pile of cash and it is no longer bleeding cash. I'm not sure what MS would want it for , perhaps the mail and cloud business and patents.

I guess Microsoft just have to keep on buying mobile phone companies hoping they may get a foot in the door of the 21st Century. They missed out on stealing a mobile iOS like they did a desktop OS, Google beat them to it and replicated the MS MO with Android and the whole clone marketing strategy. Such irony.
