Apple to allow limited WWDC streaming at AltConf

After threatening to pursue legal action against AltConf over plans to stream WWDC content at an unaffiliated conference, Apple on Friday agreed to grant limited access to keynote and Platforms State of the Union presentations.




According to AltConf, an outpouring of "support and passion" from the developer community over the past day has given Apple cause to reconsider a Wednesday decision that barred streaming access to the Worldwide Developers Conference.

As of today, the WWDC keynote and Platforms State of the Union sessions will both be aired live on Monday at AltConf's viewing room. Under terms agreed upon by both parties, all other WWDC sessions will not be made available for screening.

For the past few years, AltConf has held free WWDC viewing events for attendees alongside its own offering of speakers, developer videos, guest panels and more. Like WWDC, the conference is held in San Francisco and takes place during the same five-day span.

AltConf introduced a paid "Hero Supporter" ticket tier for 2015, causing confusion as to whether organizers were attempting to profit off WWDC's live stream.
AltConf was never charging for access to any Apple content, and this has been clear in our communications with Apple over the past weeks. AltConf is a community driven event and Paid Hero tickets were never meant as a ticket to cover the cost of the stream but to allow the community to show their support and offset the costs of renting the theatre.
Conference organizers note paid tickets only guarantee access to two speaking theaters under certain conditions, not areas showing streaming content.

Apple is offering its own keynote stream to Apple TV owners, iOS device users and through the Web, while developers can access live lab sessions by visiting Apple's Developer website. AppleInsider will offer live coverage of the event as it unfolds next week.

    Clearly AltConf was able to convince Apple to their satisfaction that the AltConf organizers were not profiting off the Apple streams.

    Good decision Apple. Case closed.

    6. The FBI saying Apple data encryption will prevent it from possibly stopping the death of a child.

    7. Apple buying a fingerprint sensor company that somehow two years after the fact prevent Google from providing a fingerprint sensor on its smartphones and tablets?

    8. Google being kicked out of iOS because it would not update Google Maps unless Apple provided a trove of customer data AND providing more branding of Google Maps in iOS even though Apple was the reason Google Maps became popular?

    9. Samsung not being allowed to slavishly copy Apple hardware and software designs? Oh wait... The US Federal court system thinks that is okay for Samsung to have done that.

    10. Samsung losing its inflated number one positions in China and India to more nimble competitors?

    Also, can't believe all this bullshit over a stream. The damn thing is available to stream/download deom Apple a few hrs after the live event.

    #5 is the best one. Pebble is so fucking pathetic. They actually made an appeal on their website for people to basically spam Apple, even though the app was well within the average approval times. Of course, the "OMG APPLE IS SO TERRIFIED OF PEBBLE THEY ARE BLOCKING THEIR APP" headline was also splashed over every tech blog. Cause, you know, according to the anti-Apple trolls this scenario is entirely probable, nevermind plausible. But this is the kind of shit narratives Apple haters thrive on.

    Even worse, the App was approved just yesterday. And now the tech blogs are reporting that "Apple caved in to demands from Pebble users".

    I'm pretty sure the drama came about because while these streams are free to view at altconf, the other events at altconf are not free.

    It's funny how people will hate on apple for apple taking issue when 3rd parties create pay-for competitors that build off apple's wwdc talks.

    Alt-conf going to lengths to advertise as such as well didn't bode well.
