The article you linked says Android users will get three months free trial and the free tier under the first image. From the article:

Correction: We’ve learned that Android users will indeed get to try Apple Music for free, both as a free three-month trial and in a free tier very similar to the one iOS users can enjoy. The only difference is that Apple Music radio stations (aside from the flagship Beats 1 station) won’t be included on Android.
How can an artist claim to be Indie if they go with an Indie label? They're just feeding a different pig.
If they were truly Indie and they wanted their music on iTunes/Apple Music then they would deal directly with Apple.
That is something I hope will happen over time. Then the artists would be like App developers and you don't hear them complaining too much about the system Apple set up for them.
Apple has done one of the shrewdest plays I've seen in a long time playing their adversary AND social media to do what they want them to, effectively "killing 2 (or more) birds with one stone" as their goal.
Have you ever heard of Occam's Razor? Apple are magnificent bastards in many ways but aren't perfect. They are a secretive company and like to keep their negotiations behind closed doors.
Funny reading comments from members who only a few tears ago were touting the virtues of torrents, boasting about the size of their pirated music collections, berating the RIAA, complaining about the cost of albums and justifying the torrent downloads because of it. Now they claim Apple was stealing from poor starving artists. Simply amazing logic.
1) A free trial is a free trial. Apple isn't making money for the service, neither should anyone else.
2) The entire purpose of the free trial is to hook users that otherwise WOULD NOT, I repeat, WOULD NOT just sign up for $9.99 day one and start handing over money to Taylor Swift every month for the rest of their lives.
3) Every artist in the world should be on their knees kissing Apple's ass for continuing to give value to digital music. How quickly these greedy bastards forget that Apple is directly responsible for their success in digital music sales. And instead of standing still, Apple continues to do all the work and negotiation for them to bring new revenue streams to them.
What did Taylor Swift or anyone else do to create the new revenue stream called Apple Music? Nothing.
The few vocal artists without enough business sense to refrain from commenting have what to say? Instead of saying "there shouldn't be a free trial at all," they say, "Hey we're not getting PAID during the free trial."
They could care less if Apple is getting paid during the trial. Apple, the company who put together the entire product, presentation, and revenue stream FOR them.
A more fitting response to whiny clueless nits like Taylor Swift would have been cutting them out from Apple Music themselves. Oh you don't like a 3 month trial? Well how about nothing? Is that better? Go invent your own streaming service and convince hundreds of millions of platform users to subscribe.
More like a few billions. Considering that Apple is going to offer the service on Android there is a potential for more than 1 billion trials. Paying the 3 month subscription in full would mean something like 21 billion dollars. Probably will only pay a fraction of that but it can still be a few billion, a lot more than potential profits in the near future for all the streaming industry.
There is no three month free trial on the Android side. That was made clear two weeks ago.
They could care less if Apple is getting paid during the trial. Apple, the company who put together the entire product, presentation, and revenue stream FOR them.
That's true but to be honest even though I'm so ready for Apple Music, knowing people behind the songs I'm listening to getting paid makes me much much more comfortable with the service. In the long run this will prove to be a wise decision. In the short term though, stock could tank.
This show of weakness will kill their ability get any kind of leverage on deals going forward. They have effectively given away their ecosystem advantage . . . to Taylor Swift. The TV service will never get off the ground without Apple paying through the nose for it, if it gets off the ground at all. Every little outcry by competitors and Apple-haters will be met with capitulation until the money pile is whittled away to nothing
This has been a PR disaster since the day Apple Music spluttered and limped on stage (at a developer's conference no less!) and culminating in this. The headlines won't read that Apple did the right thing; they'll say that Apple caved, and that's what content providers will remember as they walk smiling into negotiations with Cue. If we create a stink, Apple will cave.
It was a PR disaster because Apple was wrong. All of my music friends disagreed with what Apple was doing. Just because it's Apple doesn't mean they are always right or always do the right thing. They make plenty of miatake and this was one of them. Which they now made right and corrected.
sounds like there was a communication breakdown. if labels leveraged the fact that they wouldn't get paid during the trial to get an additional 1.5% royalty rate, then they are playing dirty to demand to get paid during the trial after concluding negotiations. sounds like not everyone was on board with that initial negotiation.
fwiw...it would take 10 yrs to recoup the free 3 months with the additional 1.5% royalties so apple got a killer deal.

1. It's Apple's choice to make a free trial. Why should artists not be paid for their work? Do employees also forgo wages during that time as well?
2. Swift sells millions of albums and sells out stadiums for concerts. She doesn't need streaming.

This was done to benefit Apple, both with ecosytem tie-in and a few billion in profit over the next few years. It wasn't done to help the music companies. Paying the content owners is a cost of doing business and the negotiations were meant to see how little they might accept to make the product available. Typical everyday business.

The more I think about this the more I hope Apple had this planned from the start: Apple Music didn't really make that big of a splash at the announcement, now everyone knows about it, they associate Apple with Taylor Swift and having a close relationship with artists, and they are aware that they can have a 3 month trial of the free service. If it was planned it was genius!

Ah.. Thank you. How I missed that the first time.
This is very interesting.

:S really!? Are you sure? I would have thought that after my comment you would at least have reread to make sure!

Here's why this makes no sense at all:
1) A free trial is a free trial. Apple isn't making money for the service, neither should anyone else.

The "outcry" also shows just how important Apple Music is and how far-reaching it will be.
We're about to see a massive sea-change in music streaming, driven by Apple.
hey bro. Do you think Apple is, like, doomed?
