Yes, but the same is true if you're at Starbucks and the internet is down and your hard disks are sitting back at home on your desk. Then what does offline storage get you? That's why I say they are complimentary.

Yes, they're there to make sure that everyone at Apple is spending their time on making their services better, not give speeches and talking about anything else that has nothing to do with Apple.  Jobs never wasted a single moment on those crap.  He kept focus. Anything that didn't involve making better Apple products was ignored.

When the first version of iCloud didn't meet expectations during launch Steve immediately fired the person in charge in front of the entire team. These days iCloud keeps crapping out over and over. Maps is way behind and is still crappy as ever, and Apple TV hasn't seen a refresh in years. The Apple Watch is a bomb. Yet, Cook still finds the time to talk about LGBT issues. Or Ive on his numerous magazine interviews since Steve's death. While Steve was alive Ive dared not waste time on that crap.  Steve would have chewed his butt off. But now, anything goes.  That's why the quality and service has slipped since Steve's death.

Rumor has it some kid installed some ransom ware on Apple's main servers. Apple had to cough up some Steam games, a new Samsung S5 phone and a season pass to a local movie theater...

It really depends on the type of work you do. For example the ultimate cloud-based workflow might be something that needs to be maintained in realtime such as worldwide database records or relies on remote collaboration. No amount of local storage is going to help you if your cloud goes down. But, the best way to protect your data is to backup often and have multiple backups in various physical locations. Also important is logical and detailed, dated file naming conventions and organized file structures so you can easily find the latest backup.

That's too much common sense (and basic knowledge) to be effective and get noticed, let alone up-voted.

My voice dictation stopped working on LTE, too. It only worked on WIFI. It's fixed now, though

I have never gotten decent download or upload rates with iCloud in Switzerland. It's even more insulting that I can have 1TB of storage space from both OneDrive and Google Drive for the same price for a single TB from iCloud. Not only that but I can upload to OneDrive at over 10mbps, iCloud, less than 1mbps, actually it's about 256kbs almost 50 percent of the time. Until such time that Apple fixes their bandwidth problem here I only use iCloud to backup my iPad, which I have to do over the night. I'm sure it's faster in the states. I honestly don't care though, OneDrive is a fantastic service that fits my needs perfectly.

Cook and the senior management should focus instead of spending their time of frivolous thing like giving interviews or voicing their political views. They're not there for that.

Because as we all can clearly see, if Cook didn't think humans should be treated like humans, Cloud services wouldn't be go down.

Are you naturally this stupid or do you have to work at it?

I see that the only talent you have is for ad hominem attacks with no reasoning skills whatsoever. Bravo sir, bravo!

Perhaps you should take heed of the old saying, "he who smelt it, dealt it?"

Maybe you should re-read the first quote you have of me there. That is literally all the argument that is needed. But I suspect you don't understand...

Again, perhaps you don't understand the words that are coming out of my mouth, or keyboard. Cook's job is not to expound on his politics. No one cares. His job is to make sure that Apple products are first class. He needs to cajole, fire, hire, bitch-slap, whoever he needs to do to get it to happen. That's what Steve Jobs did. He didn't waste his time on the other junk.

No, I completely understand that you don't see that Cook standing in support of human beings having human rights is exactly what he should do. You also don't understand that in fact a majority of people care about human rights. I suspect you are libertarian though, and have no actual sense of empathy.

All human beings job is to support human beings. If you can't see that, maybe you are not one.

A person is under no obligation to help another person. None. America isn't China or Russia or (insert name of country that does not recognize individual rights).

Cook's job, and that of his company, is to make the lives of people easier, and he's expanded that to mean that they intend to leave the world a slightly better place than they found it.

That includes going renewable-energy, and telling jerk investors who fear for shareholder value to go **** themselves and invest elsewhere.

It also includes fighting bigotry and advancing equality, and telling jerk customers who fear for the Second Coming to go **** themselves and buy elsewhere.

That is the textbook definition of "antisocial".

(Incidentally, does the U.S. really have no law requiring you to give first aid? You can get jailed for not helping somebody in obvious life-threatening distress here.)

Again, since you clearly don't understand the words that I'm typing. Let me try this another way.  Steve Jobs didn't give a crap about human anything, never did. He made Apple in the company that you see today. If it's good enough for him it's good enough for anyone else that comes after him. I guess you never bothered to read anything about how he treated others right? Human rights, haha, you make me laugh!

Instead, Apple is on it's way down the toilet. Things are no longer firing on all cylinders because Cooks focuses too much about the crap that have nothing to do with making great products. Maps still broken, iCloud still spotty, senior execs leaving, including possibly Ive. Yea, things are not looking good.

Cook should not stray too far from the actual purpose of the company:  To make the best products they can make.

Keeping perspective when you have 'all the money in the world' is a rare thing for any company to keep. Andy Grove famously infused his company with a sense of impending doom so they remained ever vigilant against sloth and a loss of competitiveness.

Apple is not here to solve imagined or real "inequalities", they provide tools for people to be better and more powerful than they could be without these tools. THAT is the biggest source of individual power. I'd love to see a renewed commitment at Apple to creating the best possible software for the best available hardware.
